Season course

Venues of the Regionalliga West 2016/17

Preseason

For the first time TSG Sprockhövel made it into the regional league. The three other promoted players already have experience in this division. The Sportfreunde Siegen managed to gain direct promotion after only one year of play in the major league . The Bonner SC and the Wuppertaler SV are back in the regional league for the first time since the 2009/10 and 2012/13 season , which both clubs had to leave due to bankruptcy .

Before the start of the season, many coaches declared Viktoria Köln, Rot-Weiss Essen and the Dortmund U23, more rarely Oberhausen, to be favorites for the championship.

First round

The opening game took place on July 29, 2016 between the newly promoted Wuppertaler SV and Viktoria Köln in the stadium at the zoo in front of around 5700 spectators. Viktoria Köln became autumn champion .

Second half

The winter break began for most teams after the 20th match day on December 12th. Two catch-up games were scheduled on December 16 and 17. As in the previous season , Borussia Mönchengladbach II wintered again at the top of the table.

On March 19, 2017, Sportfreunde Siegen announced their withdrawal from the regional league. The Sportfreunde were thus determined to be the first relegated to the Oberliga Westfalen , regardless of their athletic placement . On March 21, 2017, Alemannia Aachen GmbH , u. a. to ensure the business operations of the 1st team from Aachen, file for bankruptcy . According to the game rules of the WDFV and the DFB , Aachen was sanctioned with a deduction of 9 points. The last matchday of the Regional League West season 2016/17 took place on May 20, 2017. The offensive champion Viktoria Köln set a new goal record for the fourth-class Regionalliga West. Viktorias Mike Wunderlich was the league's most successful goalscorer with 29 goals. Viktoria Köln had already secured the championship prematurely on matchday 31 and qualified for the two promotion games . The qualification for the play-off for the entry into the first main round of the DFB-Pokal could secure the SG Wattenscheid 09 on the 33rd matchday. In addition to the last victories in the table, TSG Sprockhövel also rose again after only one season in the regional league. Further relegated teams were Rot Weiss Ahlen and FC Schalke 04 II .

After the last game day

In the two promotion games , which were played on May 28 and June 1, Viktoria Köln missed promotion against north-east champions FC Carl Zeiss Jena due to the away goals rule . In the playoff for a place in the 1st main round of the DFB Cup, SG Wattenscheid lost to the league champions TuS Erndtebrück .

Around four weeks after the last match day, Sportfreunde Siegen filed for bankruptcy. Unlike the Aacheners, however, the winners are not (retrospectively) deducted 9 points according to the DFB's game rules.
