↑ 2nd Bundesliga 2018/19 |
The 2018/19 season of the 3rd football league was the eleventh season of the third-highest German division in men's football . It started on July 27, 2018 with the game of the relegated second division Eintracht Braunschweig against the relegant Karlsruher SC and ended on May 18, 2019. From December 24, 2018 to January 25, 2019, the season was interrupted by a winter break.
For the first time in the history of the third division, four relegated teams were determined, and for the first time there were regular Monday games. Furthermore, it was the first, but so far only, time that a U23 team from a higher-class club could not qualify for the league. With the relegation of FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt at the end of the previous season, for the first time no team that had been part of the league since its foundation took part in the game.
Season course
Promotion fight
Already on matchday 34, VfL Osnabrück , who had only just barely escaped relegation in the previous season, secured their early and sixth promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga after a 2-0 win over VfR Aalen . A game day later, the Lower Saxony made clear the championship title; they were the first club in the history of the 3rd division to celebrate their second championship. On the 37th matchday, Karlsruher SC was also able to make their return to the second division perfectly, while SV Wehen Wiesbaden secured their first participation in the promotion relegation, where they had to face FC Ingolstadt 04 and after a 1: 2 and a 3 : 2 was able to celebrate the return to the second division after ten years by applying the away goals rule . The last competitor in the promotion battle was Hallesche FC ; the top quartet was able to break away early and was mathematically unattainable three game days before the end of the season.
Relegation battle
On the 35th matchday, the descent of VfR Aalen after nine seasons in professional football was determined early. The second relegated team was added one day before the end of the season to SC Fortuna Köln , while on the last day of the match Sportfreunde Lotte , SG Sonnenhof Großaspach , FC Carl Zeiss Jena , Energie Cottbus and Eintracht Braunschweig competed for relegation. Braunschweig had previously been on a relegation zone from the 3rd to the 28th match day, 15 of which were bottom of the table. Ultimately, Jena, Großaspach and Braunschweig were able to keep the class, Cottbus, on the other hand, rose after a 1: 1 against their rivals Braunschweig after only one season back into the regional league, with Eintracht only able to show a goal difference of 1 better. Lotte also had to move into fourth division after three years in the third division.

Economic situation of the clubs
Funds from broadcasting rights
Each third division club receives 1.28 million euros from broadcast rights. In the previous season it was 937,000 euros. A total of 16 million euros has been distributed annually since the 2018/19 season instead of the previous 12.8 million euros. Since Werder Bremen II was the last second team in a first or second division to be relegated in the preseason, the amount has to be divided by more clubs. The second teams of the professional clubs will not be taken into account in the distribution of the funds.
Player budgets
In June 2018, the relegated second division Eintracht Braunschweig and 1. FC Kaiserslautern received the promise of a solidarity donation of 600,000 euros each. Each club in the second division season 2017/18, regardless of the German Football League (DFL), paid 66,666 euros into one pot to make it easier for the two former second division clubs to start over in the third division. This was already decided in April, as the majority of the clubs were involved in the relegation battle until shortly before the end of the season. Other clubs in the third division reacted angrily and spoke of distortion of competition, especially since the relegated parties are contractually entitled to a transitional allowance of 500,000 euros from a rescue fund of the DFL and both clubs would be among those with the highest budgets in the league anyway. In addition, the clubs can count on substantial transfer proceeds for some of their experienced players in the second division. The player budget of FC Kaiserslautern should amount to five million euros. Eintracht Braunschweig is also one of the financially strongest clubs in the third division with a relatively high budget.
With an estimated 5 to 7 million euros, the licensed player budget of SV Wehen Wiesbaden is again one of the highest in the league. Brita bears around half of the budget .
The budget of 1860 Munich was increased in June 2018 by the Jordanian businessman Hasan Ismaik by two to five million euros. The budget of the Karlsruher SC will decrease by almost 20 percent from 5.5 million euros to around 4.5 million euros. Hansa Rostock can count on a budget increase of around 700,000 euros to 4.4 million euros.
Thanks to the Russian investor and club president Mikhail Ponomarew, promoted KFC Uerdingen is said to have had a player budget of three to four million euros in the last regional league season. Thanks to the Ponomarews funds, Krefeld was able to sign the Bundesliga experienced Stefan Aigner , Maximilian Beister and Dennis Daube as well as the 29-year-old ex-national player Kevin Großkreutz .
Fortuna Cologne does not provide any information about its finances. The association is financially supported by the media entrepreneur Michael W. Schwetje. Kickers Würzburg does not publish the amount of the season budget either. In the previous season 2017/18 it was assumed that the player budget was in the upper third of the third division. The main sponsor is Flyeralarm .
The player budget of Energie Cottbus is around 3.5 million euros, that of Halleschen FC is 3.3 million euros, that of Preußen Münster is 3.2 million euros and that of VfL Osnabrück is 3 million euros.
Carl Zeiss Jena had a player budget of 2.7 million euros in the 2017/18 season. SF Lotte's player budget is around 2.1 million euros. The main sponsor is the mechanical engineering company Frimo . The SpVgg Unterhaching is one with a budget of two million euros to the financially weaker clubs in the league. The licensed player budget of SV Meppen is estimated at around 2 million euros. The player budgets of SG Sonnenhof Großaspach and VfR Aalen are also around 2 million euros . The FSV Zwickau increases its budget for the third league team by 100,000 euros to 1.8 million euros.
Financial fair play and promotion of young talent
In September 2018, the DFB decided to introduce so-called financial fair play and a youth development fund in the 3rd division in order to improve the economic situation of the clubs and strengthen their talent development. A total of around € 3.5 million is to be distributed to the clubs. Up to € 550,000 is to be shared equally among clubs with “positive seasonal results” and clubs that “have achieved or even exceeded their target season goal”. A further € 2.95 million is to flow into the youth development of the participants, whereby the use of U21 players with German nationality has a positive effect on the distribution rate per club. The condition for the distribution is the use for "charitable purposes".
The distribution of the pots is planned for September at the end of a season.
