The VfL Sportfreunde Lotte is a sports club with about 1,500 members in six departments of the municipality of Lotte in the Westphalian region Tecklenburger Land ( Kreis Steinfurt ). The most successful and well-known division of the club is the soccer team, which played in the 3rd division from 2016 to 2019 .

history

The club was founded in 1929 under the name Turnverein Lotte and initially limited itself to gymnastics. After the club was re-established under the name VfL Sportfreunde Lotte on February 9, 1946, departments for soccer and handball were set up in addition to gymnastics.

After the footballers had played in the top group of the association league for many years, the association league championship in the 2003/04 season promoted promotion to the Oberliga Westfalen . In the 2007/08 season they reached fourth place and thus qualified for the new three-track regional league. The 2008-09 season ended Sportfreunde under coach Maik Walpurgis in 10th place and qualified through the finals in Westphalia Cup for the first round of the German Cup 2009/10 . There the sports fans of the Bundesliga club VfL Bochum were drawn, which just managed to prevail 1-0.

After Sportfreunde Lotte had finished the 2011/12 regional league season in the western season as second in the table, one point behind Borussia Dortmund's second team , they lodged a complaint with the DFB and demanded admission as the 21st member in the 3rd division 2012/13 because players from Rot-Weiss Essen had confessed to betting against their own team on matchday 36 before a game against Borussia Dortmund II. This objection was rejected on May 25, 2012 because no match manipulation could be proven and the objection period had expired.

At the end of the 2012/13 season the Sportfreunde became champions of the Regionalliga West and thus secured their participation in the promotion round to the 3rd soccer league , in which they played two games against the northeast champions RB Leipzig . The away game was lost 0-2, at home the Sportfreunde led 2-0 after 90 minutes, but failed in extra time (2-2) and thus missed promotion to the third division . In the following seasons, Sportfreunde Lotte played with the front (2nd place 2013/14 , 6th place 2014/15 ), but missed a new qualification for the promotion round. This was achieved again in the 2015/16 season. Sportfreunde Lotte were champions of the Regionalliga West with 83 points. In the promotion relegation to the 3rd division, they beat Waldhof Mannheim , the champions of the Regionalliga Südwest, 2-0 after a round trip and were promoted to the 3rd division for the first time .

In the 2016/17 season, the sports fans met Bundesliga club Werder Bremen in the first round of the DFB Cup , which they defeated 2-1 on August 21, 2016. With 10,059 spectators, a new club record was set in this game. In the second round, the sports fans in the Frimo Stadium at home were able to beat another Bundesliga club, Bayer 04 Leverkusen , 6: 5 from a draw in front of 8,763 spectators . In the round of 16, the second division TSV 1860 Munich was defeated 2-0. Borussia Dortmund was drawn as opponents in the quarter-finals. However, the game could not take place on February 28, 2017 due to a storm and was postponed to March 14, 2017. For the game, the Bremen bridge in neighboring Osnabrück was avoided . Here Lotte was eliminated in the quarter-finals against Borussia Dortmund with 0: 3. Sportfreunde were able to keep the class in their first third division season , they finished the 2016/17 season in twelfth place.

Coach Ismail Atalan then moved to VfL Bochum and was replaced by Oscar Corrochano . His contract was terminated after just a few weeks. Marc Fascher took over as coach at the end of July 2017 and was dismissed after just three months. Andreas Golombek was his successor and managed to stay up with the sports fans. The 2018/19 season began again with a coaching carousel. Matthias Maucksch was sacked after a few match days and his successor Nils Drube only lasted until the beginning of April 2019. Ismail Atalan then returned to Lotte, but could no longer prevent his team from relegating.

Atalan gave up his coaching activity at Lotte at the end of February 2020 because he switched to Hallescher FC in the same role . On April 17th of that year Imke Wübbenhorst was introduced as the club's new trainer from July 1st, 2020. After Inka Grings at SV Straelen in April 2019, she is the second coach to coach a German fourth division soccer team in the men's division. She received a two-year contract.
