Ralf Balzis (born  July 31, 1965 in Weilbach ) is a former German soccer player and soccer coach . He is currently working as a scout at Hamburger SV .

Player career

After Ralf Balzis was initially active in the youth teams of Germania Weilbach and SG Hoechst, he laced his soccer shoes for Kickers Offenbach from 1983 to 1985 . In the relegation season 1983/84 he was not used and in the following second division season he only had five missions, but scored two goals.

He then moved at the age of 20 years for Hamburger SV , scoring as a regular player in addition to the later also to Eintracht Frankfurt exchanged Heinz Gründel in the 1985/86 season five goals in 22 games. But the next year he lost his regular seat to Frank Schmöller and then left HSV for Eintracht Frankfurt. Before the move, however, he won the DFB Cup again with his ex-club.

But also in Hessen at Frankfurt Eintracht he had a difficult time against Włodzimierz Smolarek and Janusz Turowski and in the 1988/89 season (Eintracht was able to secure relegation in two relegation games against 1.FC Saarbrücken) against Jørn Andersen , Dieter Eckstein and Heinz Gründel . In these two years, the trained striker was only able to score five goals. Therefore, his contract was not extended and Balzis moved to Austria until 1991 and played for First Vienna FC 1894 and SV Austria Salzburg .

In 1991 he returned to Germany for VfL Osnabrück in the 2nd Bundesliga, where he became a regular player. However, he rose at the end of the 1992/93 season with VfL in the then third-class league and played from 1994 to 1996 in the newly created Regionalliga Nord. In his last season for Osnabrück he was able to score 11 goals in 30 league games, so that SG Wattenscheid 09 noticed him. With Wattenscheid he rose confidently as champion of the Regionalliga West in the 2nd Bundesliga, but then left the club in the direction of SV Wilhelmshaven. With his new club he bobbed around in the midfield of the Regionalliga Nord for two years before leaving the club in 1999 to join the then ambitious sports club Sportfreunde Lotte at the age of 34 .

Coaching career

At the beginning of the 2001/02 season, the then 36-year-old decided to take on his first position as a coach at BS Vörden in the regional league. However, he resigned after one season in order to follow the call of his ex-clubs, Hamburger SV (active as a regional scout) and VfL Osnabrück (since then active there as a youth coach). From the 2009/2010 season, Ralf Balzis will be active again as a coach at the BW Merzen club in the district league.

Scout

Since 2002 he has been working for Hamburger SV as a regional scout together with five other regional scouts. They are intended to keep HSV up to date on developments in the region’s players and selection teams.

HSV old league

He is still active for the "HSV old stars" and plays together with many former HSV players such as Lothar Dittmer , Manfred Kaltz or Horst Hrubesch in friendly games / tournaments as well as in old-man indoor tournaments for former professionals.

Oddities

Ralf Balzis stood with Hamburger SV in the German Cup Finals in 1987 and won with 3: 1 against Stuttgarter Kickers , but did not play. The following year he played with his new club Eintracht Frankfurt in the final of the DFB Cup against VfL Bochum , but he did not play here either. He won the cup again without having played a single minute in a final.
