Career
In his youth, Zimmermann first played for BSG Stahl Bad Salzungen, before joining the FC Carl Zeiss Jena student team in 1988 and visiting the KJS in the city of Saale. From 1992 to 1998 he played in Jena's first team, which at that time played almost continuously in the 2nd Bundesliga . Only in the 1994/95 season did the team play in the Regionalliga Nordost , in which it became champions and immediately rose again. Zimmermann played 86 games in the second division, in which he scored a total of 25 goals.
From 1998 to 2000 he played for SpVgg Unterhaching , with whom he was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga in 1999. In addition to eleven second division games, he also played nine first division games for Unterhaching. After relegation in 2000, he left the Munich suburbs.
After playing for the Stuttgarter Kickers , Alemannia Aachen and FC Sachsen Leipzig from 2000 to 2004 , Zimmermann returned to Carl Zeiss Jena. He rose with Jena in 2005 in the Regionalliga Nord and a year later in the 2nd Bundesliga. Mark Zimmermann's contract expired at the end of the 2006/07 season. Zimmermann played in the 2nd team from 2007/08 and was also assistant coach of FC Carl Zeiss Jena II. In September 2007, for his last season in the first team, he was voted Player of the Year by club officials, fans and internet users . Under coach Valdas Ivanauskas , Zimmermann returned to the first professional team. At the start of the second round of training for the 2007/2008 season, Zimmermann was again sorted out by coach Henning Bürger. On September 14, 2008 he took over the job as interim coach at FC Carl Zeiss Jena and headed FC Carl Zeiss Jena in 2 games, including the DFB Cup . He was downgraded as assistant coach after René van Eck was signed. On March 29, 2016, FC Carl Zeiss Jena announced that Zimmermann will be head coach from the 2016/2017 season. He replaced Volkan Uluç , whose contract was not renewed.
On December 8, 2018, he and his assistant coach Martin Ullmann were released from his duties after he had already slipped with the team to a relegation rank.
In June 2019 Zimmermann was hired by 1. FC Köln to train the U-21s.
