The 2018/19 season of Regionalliga West was the eleventh season of this regional football league as the fourth-highest division in German men's football . It was the seventh season since the leagues were regrouped into five regional leagues.
As part of a transitional arrangement up to a comprehensive reorganization of the regional leagues , the promotion mode to the 3rd division was reorganized. For the first time since the division was reclassified , the champions of Regionalliga West rose directly to the 3rd division in 2019/20 and did not have to qualify in a promotion round as before .

Season course
Preseason
The newly promoted SV Lippstadt 08 played its second season in the Regionalliga West after 2013/14 . The SV Straelen appeared for the first time in the Regionalliga West; In 2007/08 the club played its last season to date in the fourth division (in the then fourth division Oberliga Nordrhein ). The second Westphalian climber, 1. FC Kaan-Marienborn , also played its first season in the regional league. The Movers Middle Rhine League TV Herkenrath had experienced a remarkable boom: In the 2010/11 season, the club still occurred in the county league C on. Herkenrath celebrated six promotions in seven years and was now playing in the regional league for the first time.
All coaches of the Regionalliga West named Viktoria Köln as a top favorite. The only team that the coaches also counted in the majority of the favorites was Rot-Weiss Essen .
First round
The season started on July 27, 2018 with the game between SC Wiedenbrück and SC Verl (1-1, 1950 spectators). The runner-up of the preseason , FC Viktoria Köln , became autumn champions .
Second half
The winter break began after matchday 21 on the weekend of December 14th to 17th, 2018 . As in the last season, Viktoria Köln overwintered at the top of the table. At the turn of the year, SG Wattenscheid , TV Herkenrath and Wuppertaler SV have revealed significant financial problems. In order to reduce personnel costs, Herkenrath had almost completely reorganized his squad for the second half of the season and changed the coach. In Wuppertal regular players have left the club and are to be replaced by young players. In addition, enough money was raised in a crowdfunding campaign to prevent bankruptcy . Wattenscheid was also able to secure the season's financing through crowdfunding .
The first matchday after the winter break was the 22nd matchday, which was scheduled for the weekend of February 15-17, 2019. In March the former national player Inka Grings became the new coach at SV Straelen ; For the first time, a coach takes over a men's team in one of the four highest German leagues. At the beginning of April, TV Herkenrath , who had also been knocked down in sports, was the first to be relegated because the club did not apply for a license for the following regional league season. For the football department, the descent meant a dramatic turning point: the football team was dissolved and entered the district league B in the following season . After completing 31 games, SV Rödinghausen secured the right to participate in the qualifying game for the first round of the DFB Cup 2019/20 against the top-ranked club of the Oberliga Westfalen 2018/19 eligible to participate in the DFB Cup . After 33 match days it was clear that SC Wiedenbrück would be back in the fifth division for the first time after 2009/10 in the next season . The direct relegation of 1. FC Kaan-Marienborn was already certain on the penultimate matchday.
The last matchday was played on May 18, 2019. After the last game day it was clear that SV Straelen would be relegated to the major league after only one season in the regional league. The battle for the championship between Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and Viktoria Köln only decided on the last match day in favor of Viktoria, which celebrated the second championship in the regional league after the 2016/17 title and rose to the third league for the first time . It was remarkable that Viktoria, who had been leading the table for a long time, dismissed her coach before the last match day and hired world champion Jürgen Kohler as coach.
