Thomas Zdebel ( Polish: Tomasz Zdebel ) [ zdɛbɛl ] (born May 25, 1973 in Katowice , Poland ) is a former football player with Polish and German citizenship . He was active in Germany, Belgium and Turkey. From 2000 to 2003 he played for the Polish national team and ended his career in 2011.

Childhood and youth

Zdebel was born in Katowice and grew up there. His father was a soccer player, but could not support his family with his income and therefore worked as a miner during the week . In 1988, at the age of 15, he moved with his parents as a repatriate to the Federal Republic of Germany and settled in Düsseldorf .

Career

society

Zdebel began playing football in the youth team at GKS Katowice . After the family moved, he joined the youth team at Fortuna Düsseldorf . In 1990 he received his first contract for a first team at Rot-Weiss Essen . He stayed with the club even after the license withdrawal and the subsequent relegation. In 1992 he moved to 1. FC Köln , for whom he played in the second team in the first year and was used for the first time in the Bundesliga in 1993. In the 1992/93 season Zdebel was twelfth with 1. FC Köln and eleventh in the following season . In the following two years, Zdebel occupied the table ranks ten and twelve with FC and again tenth place in the table in his last season . During his time at 1. FC Köln, he was initially considered a "playmaker talent", later as an "eternal talent" and a "sloppy genius".

After five years in Cologne, he joined the Belgian First Division in 1997 for the then champion Lierse SK . With the club he finished seventh in his first season and qualified for the Champions League . In the group stage, the club was eliminated from the bottom of the group with five defeats and one draw. In his second season, Zdebel again finished seventh with Lierse and won the Belgian Cup. In the 1999/2000 season he took eighth place with Lierse in the league game. In the UEFA Cup , the club was eliminated in the first round against FC Zurich . In the 2000/01 season Zdebel was tenth with Lierse SK, in the UEFA Cup they were eliminated against Girondins Bordeaux . During his time in Lier, Zdebel was used by coach Jos Daerden in the central midfield, but he also worked in defense.

In 2001 he moved to the Süper Lig to Gençlerbirliği Ankara . In his first season he finished eighth with the club and a year later third.

For the 2003/04 season , VfL Bochum signed him on the recommendation of Henrik Andersen . In 2006, when he was promoted, he extended his contract to 2009. During the 2008/09 winter break, coach Marcel Koller sorted the Bochum captain into the second team. Inadequate athletic performance was given as the reason. Since Zdebel could not understand the decision, he moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen during the 2008/09 winter break .

Alemannia Aachen signed him for the 2010/11 season . He signed a one-year contract valid until June 30, 2011. After he was a substitute only a few times in the first half of the season and not at all in the second half of the season, his contract was not extended. Then he ended his career.

National team

Zdebel decided to play for the Polish national team and qualified with her for the 2002 World Cup , but could not take part in the tournament due to a herniated disc. On September 6, 2003, Zdebel made his last international game when he came on in the 89th minute for Mirosław Szymkowiak in the 2-0 victory in the European Championship qualifier in Riga against Latvia . On October 2, 2003 he was nominated for the decisive game in the qualifying in Budapest against Hungary , but was not used.

From 2012 Zdebel trained the D-youth of SV Bergisch Gladbach and has been the club's youth coordinator since 2014. He coached the first team from March 18, 2015 to October 2, 2017. From November to the end of December 2018, Thomas Zdebel took over the position of head coach at the regional league team TV Herkenrath .
