For decades, the footballers from TV Herkenrath only played in the district league. The club reached its sporting low point in 2009 when it was relegated to the district league C, the lowest division in the Berg football district . Two years later, the sporting upswing was initiated with the return to the district league B. It was the first of four consecutive promotions that brought TV Herkenrath to the state league for the 2014/15 season . In the following 2015/16 season, the team made it into the fifth-class Middle Rhine League . There, in the 2016/17 season under coach Alexander Voigt, a sixth ascent in a row was narrowly missed when the Herkenrather were runner-up behind FC Wegberg-Beeck on the last day of the game due to a 1-0 defeat against FC Inde Hahn .

In a friendly game on August 30, 2017, TV Herkenrath lost 7-2 against 1. FC Köln after a 2-1 half-time lead in front of more than 2,000 spectators in the BELKAW-Arena . On January 1, 2018, Chris Burhenne became the new coach of the soccer team, which took the lead in the 2017/18 season on matchday 22. After a 3-2 win against SV Bergisch Gladbach 09 on the penultimate matchday, the promotion to the Regionalliga West was certain due to the better goal difference. Behind the upswing was Manfred Faber, the owner of a tax consulting company , who was also chairman of the association for many years. After internal quarrels, Faber withdrew and only after winning new sponsors could the financial failure be avoided.

After a good start in the regional league with eight points after the eighth game day, it was foreseeable that the team could not keep up in terms of sport. Since the 9th matchday, the team was in last place in the table. As a first consequence, the club separated from coach Chris Burhenne after the 16th match day, after he only reached one point in the following eight games from the ninth match day. The team was at that time with a goal difference of 23:47 on the last place in the table. Thomas Zdebel became his successor on November 4, 2018 . The first game under his direction was the first round game in the Mittelrheinpokal 2018/19 on November 6, 2018, which was won 4-2 against the Bonner SC . The round of 16 match took place on November 28, 2018 against SC Fortuna Köln . Fortuna prevailed after a penalty shoot-out with 5: 3 (0: 0 afterwards).

Due to the sporting situation and financial problems due to the withdrawal and the resulting financial dependency of the main sponsor, almost the entire team disbanded in the 2018/19 winter break. Top performers such as Lars Lokotsch ( SV Rödinghausen ) and Vincent Geimer ( 1. FC Köln II ) as well as coach Zdebel left the club. The team officially played the second half of the Regionalliga to the end. On January 13, 2019, Giuseppe Brunetto , who came from Blau-Weiß Friesdorf , took over as coach. The team finished the 2018/19 season in the regional league with only three wins, six draws and 25 defeats, being beaten bottom of the table. 23 points were missing from the table penultimate. At a general meeting held on May 16, 2019, a unanimous vote was taken to dissolve the soccer team in order to enable a new start in the district league B. The coach Giuseppe Brunetto left the club for 1. FC Düren . Reiner Jonas, with whom the team started in the mountain B2 district league, was introduced as the new coach.
