The Turnverein Bensberg 01 is a German sports club from the Bergisch Gladbach district of Bensberg , which was initially founded in 1901 as a pure gymnastics club. In addition to numerous popular sports, the basketball and wheel gymnastics departments are particularly well-known nationwide.

history

The gymnastics club Bensberg was founded in 1901 by students. For a long time this department was the heart of the club and groups of the club took part in numerous national gymnastics competitions and gymnastics festivals.

basketball

The basketball department founded in 1975 is still one of the club's figureheads and achieved numerous successes and produced several national and Bundesliga players.

Bundesliga and Belkaw BasCats

The women's team rose to the women's basketball league in 1992 after a long period in the 2nd division . Here she reached the semi-finals of the German championship (1995) and the semi-finals of the German Cup in 1996. After numerous top performers left the club (including Sabine Schmiesing , Yvonne Schneeloch , Jutta Vogelgesang and Heike Roth ), the club was forced to relegate to the second division in 1996. After a few years of being in the second division and a complete overhaul of the team, with particular recourse to the youth players around Corry Berger , in 2001, under the direction of coach Gary Williams, promotion to the 1st Bundesliga was achieved again. The following season was marked by the departures (including Corry Berger) so that you were relegated without a single win. Due to the withdrawal of Goldzack Wuppertal, however, they were allowed to continue playing in the Bundesliga in the 02/03 season. In the following years they established themselves in the Bundesliga, also with the help of the main sponsor Belkaw. Now they also competed as "RegioBerg BasCats Bensberg". The greatest success of this time was probably reaching the Final Four in the Cup, in which, however, after two defeats, they only finished 4th.

In 2006, Belkaw announced that it would reduce its commitment, after which the department management was forced to withdraw the team from the Bundesliga. Since then she has played in the 1st regional league of the WBV.

The first men's team of the club was promoted to the second regional league in 2008, but had to relegate immediately after a season without any win in 2009, and has played in the major league since then.

Youth work

Despite or precisely because of its proximity to other Bundesliga clubs (Leverkusen, Rhöndorf, Cologne, Bonn), TV Bensberg has been represented almost everywhere in the top youth leagues for years.

There are also successes in German championships (2nd place U18w 2003, 3rd place U16w 2008). At NRW level, there were two championships (U 14m 2001, including with Philip Schwethelm; U14w, 2007) and 6 runner-up titles (in different age groups, male and female).

Known players

Among the most famous players that the talent factory of TV Bensberg has produced include u. a. Corry Berger (50-time national player, season 10/11 heli Donau / Ries), Philipp Schwethelm (national player, Bundesliga player, season 11/12 FC Bayern Munich ), Suska Berger (Bundesliga player, season 11/12: Wolfenbüttel Wildcats) and Axel Pleuger (Bundesliga player ). The national wheelchair basketball player and Paralympics winner 2012, Mareike Adermann , also began playing basketball here.

In addition, the (temporary) national players Heike Roth (172 A-internationals), Jutta Vogelgesang (64), Susanne Biemer (5) and Ina Schwabenland (2) at least temporarily went basketball for the TVB in the Bundesliga.
