Marc Schuh (born August 12, 1989 in Bergisch Gladbach ) is a German wheelchair athlete .

Life

Marc Schuh was born with a malformation of the spine that makes walking impossible for him. In 2007 he graduated from the Otto Hahn Gymnasium in Bensberg as the best in chemistry and physics. In the same year he began studying physics at the University of Heidelberg , graduating in 2012 as a Bachelor and then in 2014 as a Master; his master thesis deals with simulations of the electrostatic and magnetic field properties and tests of the Penning-ion source at THe-Trap . He then did his doctorate and conducted research at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Klaus Blaum's group until May 2019 . The aim was to use Penning traps to improve knowledge about the Q value of tritium .

Athletic career

Via wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis, Schuh got into athletics at the age of ten, when he won the Mobifanten Cup as part of the Heidelberg Marathon .

In 2005, when he took part in the Junior World Championships in Stoke Mandeville (United Kingdom) for the first time, he was U18 runner-up in the 100 and 200 meters. At the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing , he reached the semi-finals over 400 meters. In the same year he secured the world championship title over 100, 200 and 400 meters in the U20 category at the Junior World Championships in the USA .

In 2009 he won gold over 100, 200, 400 and 4x100 meters at the IWAS World Junior Games in Nottwil , this time in the U23 category. Schuh has also held the German records over 100, 200 and 400 meters since 2009. In November 2009 he was world champion over 400 meters while participating in the IWAS World Championships in Bangalore . From 2010 to 2017 he held the European record over 400 meters with 45.64 s. In 2015, he improved this record to 45.40 s, setting a new, second-fastest time ever. He is the first athlete to stay under 46 seconds three times. At the 2012 Paralympics in London , Schuh finished fifth over 100 meters and sixth over 400 meters. At the IPC World Championships in Lyon in 2013, he won the silver medal over 400 and the bronze medal over 100 meters. In 2014 he started at the IPC European Championships in Swansea over 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters. He made it onto the podium over all four courses and achieved his best result over 400 m with a silver medal.

He took part in the 2016 Paralympics in Rio , but retired in advance due to illness.

The IPC World Championship in London 2017 was his last participation in an international championship. He took 5th place over 200 m and 7th place over 400 m.
