The place was first mentioned as Stoches around 1086. When the place came into the possession of a Norman noble family de Mandeville around 1284, the addition Mandeville was added.
The first wheelchair and amputee world championships were held in Stoke Mandeville in 1948 . In total, these world championships took place in the place eight times, which later became the template for the Paralympics .
The mascot Mandeville for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London was named after the location.
