The Eurobowl XXVIII took place as the final of the newly created Big6 European Football League competition. In previous years, the Eurobowl was the final of the European Football League . In a purely German final, the Berlin Adler and the New York Lions faced each other. With a win in their home stadium, the Berliners were able to secure their second Eurobowl title .
Neither team had applied to host the game, so the game was hosted by a neutral organizer. The home right was therefore determined by drawing lots, after which Berlin was officially run as a visiting team in its own stadium.
The way to the final
In the past few years the Eurobowl was at the end of the European Football League. The final was preceded by a play-off phase with quarter and semi-finals. When the Eurobowl was integrated into the newly created Big6 , the mode also changed. The group winners of the two preliminary round groups qualified directly for the final.
In their group, the New York Lions had to deal with defending champions Raiffeisen Vikings Vienna and league rivals Dresden Monarchs . A 17:10 win in Dresden was followed by the game against Vienna, which was lost in the final phase by a missed extra point by the Lions very close with 13:14. In order to advance, the Braunschweiger had to hope for a victory from Dresden against Vienna, which, however, could not be too high with a maximum of 13 points difference. With the 41:35 of the monarchs, exactly this case occurred and the Lions moved into the Eurobowl thanks to the German rifle aid.
In group B, Berlin met last year's finalist Swarco Raiders Tirol and the 2012 champion, the Calanda Broncos . With wins in both games, the Adler qualified undefeated for the final.
