Spono Eagles is a Swiss handball club from Nottwil in the canton of Lucerne . In 2015 the club name was changed from Spono Nottwil to Spono Eagles.

history

The beginnings of the club, which was founded as a gymnastics and athletics club, go back to 1971. Spono is derived from SPOrt NOttwil . As early as 1974 handball was played as compensation and in 1977 the first women's team was put together. In 1979 Beat Sidler took over the coaching position and led the team in 1981 to the 2nd division and in 1982 directly to the 1st division. As early as 1988 Spono Nottwil was in the highest Swiss league, the NLA . After 20 years as a coach, Beat Sidler handed over a top team to his successor, Guido Frei. Until 2002 the club consisted of the two departments gymnastics club and handball. In the same year, two independent associations were founded.

In 2000 the first Swiss championship title was celebrated. The double followed the following year . The third championship title followed in 2006. In 2011 and 2013 the second and third cup victories were celebrated. The team has also been regularly represented in the European Cup since 1991. In 2000, 2001 and 2006 they even took part in the Champions League .
