Yellow Winterthur is a Swiss handball club from Winterthur that was founded in 1961.

history

Yellow Winterthur was founded in October 1961 as " Vikings ", which took part as a team in the student championship at the Im Lee canton school . The team won these championships - only called «Taucherli» by the opponents because of their school performance - with a goal difference of 104: 4 goals. In the following championship season, the team was able to take over the starting position of a dissolving Winterthur 2nd league quarter team and then rose twice in a row, whereupon they played in the National League B in 1967. Three years later, the team was promoted to National League A on the small field, and in 1977 they did the same in the hall . You could stay there until 1982 before relegating again - the highlight was a 6th place in the 1978/79 season. In 1985 they went back to the lower division of the first division.

Apart from a short excursion to the NLB, Yellow Winterthur was finally able to establish itself again definitely in the second-highest league from 1995. In 1999 they reported back to the NLA, where they stayed until 2001, when they went back to the NLB due to a league downsizing. Most recently they managed to get promoted to the NLA again in the 2009/10 season, where they said goodbye after one season - in contrast to the women's team, which also rose to the top division for the first time and was able to hold its own without difficulty.

Men's

The men's team from Yellow Winterthur currently plays in the NLB, with a cooperation with Pfadi Winterthur the team has been called SG Yellow / Pfadi since 2015. Yellow Winterthur also has 4 other men's teams in the lower leagues.

Women

The women's team has been playing in the highest Swiss league, the Swiss Premium League, since the 09/10 season. The qualification for the European Cup succeeded in both previous seasons. In addition to the main team, Yellow has two other teams in the 2nd and 3rd leagues.

Yellow Cup

Yellow Winterthur organizes the Yellow Cup once a year. The tournament first took place in 1971 and since then, with one exception, has always been held during the winter break. Until 1997 the field of participants consisted of club teams (the last winner was Pfadi Winterthur ). After that, they switched to national teams as the newly created Champions League made it difficult to sign clubs for the tournament. The well-known cup lost part of its reputation as a result of this changeover, but it remained the most important handball tournament in Switzerland. In the meantime it has blossomed into a popular preparation tournament for the national teams.
