2007–2012

Qualifying round

Twelve clubs have been playing for the title in the NLB since the 2007/08 season. In addition, each team plays a game against the Swiss U21 national team, whereby the points from this game are also counted. After a simple round-trip round (22 + 1 rounds), the first four teams qualify for the promotion round while the last two teams have to relegate to the first division. The Swiss U21 can neither be promoted nor relegated.

Promotion lap

The four teams that have qualified for the promotion round play an easy round-trip round (6 rounds). The first and second placed will be promoted to the NLA.

2012 – today

Rank 1 and 2 of the main round play the playoff final after best-of-5, whereby the better ranked team has the first home right. The winner of the series moves up to the NLA, the loser stays in the NLB.

Ascent

The teams in 13th and 14th place are relegated to the first division.
