Borussia Dortmund ( Ballspielverein Borussia 1909 eV Dortmund , BVB , BVB 09 ) is a German sports club from the Westphalian city of Dortmund , whose women's handball team plays in the Bundesliga .

The Union

The handball players of BVB

The first attempt to move up to the 1st Bundesliga was made by the BVB handball players in 1992 when, as a second division newcomer, they confidently secured the championship of the 2nd Bundesliga center , but failed in the subsequent relegation round at PSV Grünweiß Frankfurt . A year later, in 1993, the relegation was abolished after the integration of the GDR clubs - the direct promotion to the sovereign champions of the 2nd Bundesliga center. There they asserted themselves in the front of the table from the first season; between 1995 and 2000 the club was always in the top three.

It also caused a stir internationally. In 1995 they reached the semi-finals in the European Cup Winners' Cup , in which they failed on TV Lützellinden (24:30, 24:24). In 1997 they even moved into the finals for the EHF Cup , but could not make up for the high 18:26 defeat at Olimpija Ljubljana in the second leg (30:26). In 1998 the European Cup Winners' Cup against Kras Zagreb (24:32, 27:21) was the final destination. On May 18, 2003, BVB finally won their first international title: The Romanian representative HC Selmont Baia Mare managed to defend their 24:16 first leg success and, despite a 21:27 defeat, won the rather insignificant Challenge Cup. The BVB handball players had their last international appearance on March 20, 2004, when they failed in the quarterfinals of the same competition with 29:33 at the Romanian club Universitatea Remin Deva (first leg: 29:27).

The Dortmund women celebrated their greatest successes at national level in the DHB Cup , in which they reached the Final Four finals six times between 1994 and 2001 and in 1997 in Riesa with a 24:22 (14:15) success on the favorite TV Lützellinden secured the title.

In the 2006/07 season, Borussia rose after 14 years from the 1st Bundesliga , but in the 2007/08 season they managed to rise again. In the following season 2008/09 the team only finished 12th and last place in the table, but did not have to relegate as the Rhein-Main bees had their license withdrawn and they moved up. In the 2009/10 season, relegation to the second division after the 20th matchday was sealed. On April 25, 2015, the team made their return to the Bundesliga with a 28:26 win against SV Allensbach .

In the 2015/16 season, the BVB handball ladies reached the Final Four in the DHB Cup as promoted players. In the semifinals they beat HSG Blomberg-Lippe 29:26 (12: 9) and qualified for the final against HC Leipzig , which was also the host of the Final Four. In the final, Borussia lost to Leipzig by just 29:28 (13:13).

On the last matchday of the 2017/18 season, the BVB handball players achieved fourth place in the table with a 26:25 away win at SG BBM Bietigheim and thus secured a starting place for the EHF Cup again after 14 years of abstinence. There they met in the second qualifying round on the Romanian representative HC Zalau . After a 25:25 in Romania, the BVB handball players defeated the opponent in the second leg on October 19, 2018 with 24:20 (13:10). The second leg took place in front of 1,300 spectators in the Westpress Arena in Hamm, as the Wellinghofen sports hall was being renovated at that time. Opponents in the third qualifying round were the defending champions from Romania from SCM Craiova . As against Zalau, the first leg against Craiova also took place in the Hammer Westpress Arena. In the end, Borussia lost just 17:19 (9: 9). The second leg in Craiova in front of 3,000 spectators was just lost with 18:19 (9:10). The BVB women thus missed the qualification for the group stage of the EHF Cup.

The 2018/19 season ended the handball women in 7th place and missed participation in the EHF Cup. In the quarter-finals of the DHB Cup against the Thuringian HC the end of the line. All home games in the Bundesliga this season were played in the Bleichsteinhalle in Herdecke, as the home hall in Dortmund-Wellinghofen was still being renovated.

Borussia Dortmund led the Bundesliga table in the 2019/20 season when the season ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic . In contrast to the leaders of the men's Bundesliga, BVB was not declared the German champions. BVB was also in the Final Four of the DHB Cup when the season ended. The opponent would have been Frisch Auf Göppingen. In April 2020, the board of the HBF guaranteed the Borussians the starting place for the group stage of the DELO Handball Champions League.

The BVB handball players play their home games in the 2500-seat sports hall in Wellinghofen .
