Thomas Happe

Thomas Happe (born March 25, 1958 in Dortmund ) is a former German handball player who won the Olympic silver medal in 1984.

The 1.89 m tall left winger was one of the best defenders of his time. He started his career at OSC Dortmund and later played for TUSEM Essen . As a rule, Jochen Fraatz played the left winger, so that Happe only appeared in defense; if Fraatz failed once, Happe represented him in the attack. Happe won the German championship with TUSEM in 1986, 1987 and 1989 , in 1988 Essen lost in the final of the European Cup , and in 1989 the team won the European Cup Winners' Cup .

Thomas Happe played in a total of 56 international matches in the German national team . He scored 16 goals. On January 13, 1981, he made his international debut in Offenburg against Romania . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles he played five games, including in the final in the 18:17 defeat against Yugoslavia. At the 1986 World Cup he was in the German squad, the team took seventh place.

After his playing career, Happe coached TuS Schutterwald and VfL Gummersbach . From December 2002 to summer 2008 he looked after the Borussia Dortmund team in the women's Bundesliga . From January 26, 2010 to December 27, 2011, Happe was in charge of the DJK / MJC Trier team , which also plays in the first women's handball league.

Thomas Happe is the son of the Olympic champion in swimming Ursula Happe . He started out as a swimmer, but changed sport because he lacked his mother's talent.
