The DJK / MJC Trier is a sports club from Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate , which originally emerged from the sports movement of the Catholic Church (DJK = German Youth Force ) and became known nationwide through the success of its women's handball team playing in the Bundesliga .

The Trier chicks

"The Kitties", as they call themselves based on the abbreviation MJC (the abbreviation is derived from the name Marian Youth Congregation , the forerunner of the sports club), played in the first women's handball league from 2000 to 2015 . The team became German champions in 2003 and only narrowly failed in 2005 when they won the title again. With the departure of well-known players and increasing financial pressure, the club repeatedly fought against relegation, but could no longer prevent it in the 2014/15 season.

2nd Bundesliga 1994-2000

In 1994 Trier rose for the first time to the two-pronged 2. Bundesliga and finished the first season in fifth place, only three points behind the eventual champions BSV Sachsen Zwickau . A small slump followed in 1995: four points less and the kitties would have been relegated. After that, however, the Trier women finally established themselves at the top of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga South . In the 1999/2000 season the time had come: With 48: 4 points and four points ahead of SV Teutonia Riemke, they secured the championship and the associated promotion to the 1st Bundesliga .

1. Bundesliga 2000–2015

In their first season in the first division, the Trier women immediately took fifth place, which was followed by a sensational third place the following year - but there was still no chance of winning the championship. This changed in the 2002/03 season: With 40: 8 points they took the championship trophy to the Moselle in front of Buxtehuder SV (36:12). Even the double would almost have been achieved this season, but at the DHB Cup final in Riesa against FHC Frankfurt / Oder a 14:11 half-time lead could not be converted into a victory and the Kitties lost 26:28.

The Kitties finished their only appearance in the Champions League in 2004 in the group stage of the best 16 teams with 3: 9 points - only the Spanish representative MAR Valencia could be defeated in their own hall.

Since the 2004/05 season, the German championship has been decided in play-off games, and the DJK / MJC also reached the finals, but had no chance against the eventual champions 1. FC Nürnberg (28:37, 21:28) . In the following two years they made it back to the playoffs, but Trier was eliminated in the semifinals. In the 2007/08 season, the Trier kitties were fifth in the double round for the first time not represented in the master play-offs. Since they missed the placement game for fifth place, the club was not represented internationally in the 2008/09 season.

In 2011 and 2012 the "kitties" only secured relegation on the last day of the match. At the end of the 2012/13 season, Trier was in eleventh place in the table and was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga, but unexpectedly received a free starting place in the Bundesliga at short notice, as the Frankfurt HC had its license withdrawn retrospectively due to economic irregularities was.

At the end of the 2014/15 season, he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga .

In the first season of 2015/16 after returning to the now single-track 2nd division, the class could be ensured three match days before the end of the season. In the end there was place 14, actually a relegation place, but it was enough after the withdrawal of other teams. The following year they improved to 8th place in the final table, only to be stuck in the relegation battle again in the 2017/18 season . In 2018 Elena Vereschako, a former player from the 2003 championship team, was hired as a coach. During the 2018/19 season it was never possible to leave the relegation zone and DJK / MJC Sportmanagement eV filed for insolvency 5 game days before the end. After relegation, the appointed insolvency administrator finally withdrew the notification for the third division before the start of the season and the team disbanded. In the 2019/20 season, the previous 2nd team of the entire DJK / MJC Trier club continued to play in the Rhineland League, the fifth level, but now the first .

Women's basketball in the 2nd division

The women's basketball team of the DJK / MJC Trier became season champion in the Regionalliga Südwest in 2011 and then prevailed in the relegation to promotion to the 2nd women's basketball league . After a good start to the 2011/12 second division season, they ended up in 8th place and thus kept their class. This success could not be repeated in the second year and so the last place in the table was followed by relegation to the regional league. The team reached there again in 2014 the relay championship and the promotion relegation, in which they failed athletically. By renouncing the winner USC Freiburg II, however, the direct return to the 2nd DBBL was achieved. After the 2014/15 season he was relegated and since then the Regionalliga Südwest Damen Nord has been played.
