The handball Bundesliga (women) 2008/09 was the 24th season of the women's handball Bundesliga . The first game day of the season began on September 5, 2008. 12 teams played in the main round for a place in the play-offs for the German championship. The best four teams then played in the play-off for the 2009 German championship . The defending champion was 1. FC Nürnberg . In addition, six teams competed in European competitions. HC Leipzig became champions for the 5th time .

- Due to the use of a player who was not eligible to play by the Thuringian HC, the game was subsequently scored 0-0 goals and 0-2 points for 1. FC Nürnberg.
Master play-offs
In the play-off games, if there was a tie, the better goal difference counted. If this was also the same, the higher number of goals scored away ( away goal rule ) decided. If there was still no winner, the winner was to be determined immediately after the respective play-off second leg without any extra time by a 7-meter throw.
Semifinals
In the semi-finals, the first in the table met fourth and the second in the table third.
The first 2nd places had the right to play the second leg at home.
The first legs took place on April 30 and May 1, 2009, the second legs on 3/10. May 2009.

Small finale
For the small final, the home right was initially with the club that was worse placed in the main round.
The small final could have been canceled by the HBVF board at the request of both clubs.
