Ulrike Mertesacker , née Ulrike Stange , (born April 25, 1984 in Oschatz ) is a German handball player .
Career
The 1.69 m tall Mertesacker, playing in the position of the right winger, played from 1998 to 2003 and again from 2005 for the Bundesliga club HC Leipzig . Between 2003 and 2005 she was loaned to the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund . On May 24, 2009, during an interview for the show Sport im Osten on Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, she announced that she was leaving HC Leipzig despite an existing contract and joining VfL Oldenburg in the summer to be closer to her partner Per Mertesacker .
For the 2010/11 season , Ulrike Mertesacker interrupted her handball career due to her pregnancy. After the birth of her first child, she moved to London with her partner Per Mertesacker. Since March 2012 she has been playing at the Thames Handball Club there.
International career
The student has so far played 38 games (63 goals) for the German women's handball team , and made her international debut on March 4, 2005 in Riesa against Croatia. During the qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , she tore a cruciate ligament in her right knee and missed her participation in the Olympics. She also canceled participation in the 2009 women's handball world championship in China for health reasons.

Private
She has been in a relationship with the soccer player Per Mertesacker since summer 2008 after they met during their rehab ; Per Mertesacker healed a ruptured inner ligament , and she herself healed a ruptured cruciate ligament . Their son was born on April 24, 2011. In June 2013 they married in Marienburg Castle near Pattensen near Hanover. She gave birth to another son on May 20, 2014.
