The season 2016/17 the second handball league for women was the 32nd in its history. 16 teams played in a total of 240 games for promotion to the top German division. The season started on September 10, 2016 and ended on May 20, 2017. HSG Bensheim / Auerbach and HC Rödertal were promoted to the 1st handball league . HSG Kleenheim, TSV Haunstetten and TuS Lintfort were relegated to the 3rd division . SG Rosengarten Blau-Weiss Buchholz was relegated from the 1st Bundesliga . The third league was promoted by the HSG Hannover-Badenstedt , the HSG Kleenheim, the TSG Ketsch and the TuS Lintfort.

mode

The mode was everyone against everyone with a home and away game. The leader of the table and the second-placed team were promoted directly to the 1st Bundesliga at the end of the season . The last four teams were relegated directly to the 3rd division . In the event of a tie, the better goal difference decided. If the goal difference was the same, playoffs were scheduled.
