HMD Global Oy (HMD) is a with Nokia affiliated Finnish company, which since December 2016 smartphones and feature phones of the brand developed "Nokia" and marketed. The company has exclusive rights to the brand under a license agreement. It was created by taking over the businesses of Microsoft Mobile , which in turn was only created through the spin-off of Nokia's device division in 2014.

HMD is in a “close partnership” with Google and uses the Android software on their smartphones, while the Series 30+ platform is mainly used on their feature phones . The HMD brand is used for corporate purposes only and will not appear in advertising, while the Nokia Mobile name is used on social media .

HMD is headquartered in Espoo , across from Nokia headquarters. Most of the company is made up of former Nokia executives. Manufacturing is outsourced to Foxconn . Nokia has not made any investments in HMD, but as a partner who sets the binding requirements, it provides patents and technologies against payment of license fees.

HMD uses a marketing strategy that advertises Nokia mobile phones as "pure, secure and up to date" (with reference to a pure Android interface and its obligation for quick updates) as well as brand trust and nostalgia.

background

Nokia has long been the global leader in the mobile phone and smartphone market and the brand has become a household name in many countries. After internal battles - and a failed series of Windows Phone smartphones that ultimately had a low global market share - the company sold its cell phone business to Microsoft in 2014, which then founded Microsoft Mobile. The Nokia brand continued to be used by Microsoft until it retired in October 2014 for Lumia smartphones. The Nokia brand is still widely trusted because of its historic success.

Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri confirmed in June 2015 that the Nokia brand will return with smartphones. Earlier this year Nokia Technologies released the N1 tablet running Android. Under the Microsoft sale agreements, Nokia would not have been allowed to sell Nokia branded phones, if they had been developed, until the agreement expired on December 31, 2015.

Suri said in February 2016 that he wanted the company to be able to work with another manufacturer but maintain "reasonable control measures".

According to the Finnish organization database, HMD global Oy was originally founded on November 9, 2015 in Helsinki.

On May 18, 2016, Microsoft Mobile announced the sale of its feature phone business to a new Finnish start-up called HMD Global Oy. The sale included design rights and the rights to use the “Nokia” brand on all types of mobile phones and tablets worldwide until 2024 (except in Japan, where Nokia phones have not been sold since 2008). HMD also signed a license agreement with Nokia Corporation, which also included the use of essential patent licenses based on the wireless standard.

Microsoft Mobile's factories, including one in Vietnam, have been sold to FIH Mobile, a subsidiary of Taiwanese company Foxconn, the world's largest electronics manufacturer. It was agreed that HMD products would be manufactured in the FIH / Foxconn factories. Total sales to HMD Global and FIH Mobile were $ 350 million. HMD has insisted on spending $ 500 million to help commercialize the new products over the next three years. The company is also backed by a Luxembourg private equity fund called Smart Connect LP, led by Jean-François Baril, who was Nokia Senior Vice President from 1999 to 2012.

history

The Nokia 6 was HMD's first smartphone based on Android

HMD Global began operations on December 1, 2016 when the Microsoft Mobile sale was completed. For the first time since 2014, mobile devices were then offered for sale on the Nokia website. The first devices, Nokia 150 and 150 Dual SIM base phones, were announced on December 13, 2016, while the first Android smartphone, Nokia 6, was announced on January 8, 2017.

At the Mobile World Congress in February 2017, HMD announced a new version of the famous Nokia 3310 (released in May), along with two new Android devices called Nokia 3 and Nokia 5. The first smartphone release was Nokia 6 which was made in China and some other Asian markets as of January. The western versions were first sold in Finland in June, with full global releases of all three Android devices expected by August.

On July 6, 2017, HMD and Carl Zeiss AG developed the camera lenses for Nokia smartphones. Nokia used Zeiss optics from 2005 to 2014, which resulted in high quality cameras.

On July 27, 2017, HMD acquired 500 designs from Microsoft Mobile, originally developed by Nokia. A notable patent is the Lumia camera's user interface, which has received critical acclaim since it appeared on the Nokia Lumia 1020.

On August 16, 2017, HMD presented their first flagship smartphone, the Nokia 8. The most outstanding features are Dual Sight, the live streaming of the front and rear Zeiss cameras (also known as “bothie”, a play on “selfie”) , and OZO Audio, which includes 360 ° spatial audio technology derived from Nokia's high-end OZO camera.

On October 25, 2017, HMD revived Nokia Beta Labs, a beta software program.

On January 11, 2018, HMD acquired the brand name Asha, the trademark of Nokia Feature Phone.

software

Nokia 3 with camera

HMD is in a strategic partnership with Google because their Nokia smartphones run the Android operating system. The software has minimal specific adjustments. This includes new icons with a more general blue theme and a different camera user interface. In addition, the classic Nokia start tone was preinstalled. HMD calls it "pure, secure and up-to-date" and claims that it contains no bloatware or additional software and that the phones get quick software updates compared to other OEMs. It can be seen as the ideal successor to Google's earlier Nexus series, which were known to run on a pure Android.

CEO Arto Nummela said in an interview in June 2017 that HMD is the “first tier partner with Google”.

According to some analysts, HMD has stayed true to its promise of quick updates as the Nokia 6 was the first Android device to receive the July 2017 update.

hardware

design

The Nokia 8

The design language of Nokia smartphones consists of typical Scandinavian design and aesthetics and is reminiscent of the earlier Lumia series. When HMD was founded in 2016, the company claimed it wanted to develop phones that remained true to Nokia's popular heritage of "design, ruggedness and reliability."

The Nokia 5, 6 and 8 are made from a single block of aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy (6000 series), while version 7 is made from aluminum-zinc alloy (7000 series). The company's chief design officers are Raun Forsyth and Alasdair McPhail.

Sales figures

HMD CEO Juho Sarvikas said on August 16, 2017 that the company had "shipped millions of units of the 3, 5 and 6 versions, with demand far exceeding supply". As of June 2017, demand for the new Nokia 3310 was up to seven times higher than expected in the UK.

By the 2nd quarter of 2017, HMD had captured 0.4% market share in the smartphone market, making it the eleventh largest in Europe and the fifth largest in Finland. An IDC analyst spoke of a "great start". According to Counterpoint Research on December 1, 2017, HMD's one-year anniversary, the company was the eighth mobile operator in the world (this includes both smartphones and feature phones).

1.5 million Nokia smartphones were sold in the first half of 2017.

On July 19, 2017, Nummela left the company by “mutual consent”, whereupon President Seiche was appointed Deputy CEO.

On August 15, 2016, Pekka Rantala, former CEO of Rovio Entertainment, was appointed Chief Marketing Officer of HMD, commenting that Nokia will be "resurrected". Prior to that, Rantala held various positions at Nokia from 1994 to 2011, including Head of Nokia's European Operations.
