Noida , as an acronym derived from N ew O khla I ndustrial D evelopment A uthority, ( Hindi : नोएडा , Noeḍā ) is an industrial city in northern India with around 640,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Noida is located in the far west of the state of Uttar Pradesh on the border with Haryana and is a south-eastern suburb of Delhi . Administratively, the city belongs to the Gautam Buddha Nagar district . The city center of Delhi is around 25 kilometers from Noida. The area was designated as a modern industrial city by the UP Industrial Area Development Act in 1976 . It was finally founded on April 19, 1976 as part of a large-scale urbanization program during the period of emergency (1975 to 1977). Sanjay Gandhi , the son of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi , is considered to be responsible for the founding of Noida.

Infrastructure

traffic

The Metro has been connecting Noida with Delhi (Line 3, Blue Line ) since 2009 . This is often overcrowded, especially at rush hour. Otherwise, Noida is rather inadequately supplied with local transport. There is only a rudimentary bus service available. As a consequence, most wealthy Indians as well as foreigners usually move to Noida by car. This is already leading to a collapse in rush hour traffic.

Gated Housing

Noida was originally planned as a large industrial park on the outskirts of Delhi. However, the strong population growth has led to a mix of commercial and residential areas. While the less privileged (e.g. craftsmen, charcoal burners) often live in combined residential and commercial buildings, the concept of "gated housing" has established itself especially for the affluent employees of service companies. In closed and guarded areas, people live in eight to ten-story apartment complexes. These areas have sub-central structures such as supermarkets, swimming pools, sports fields, schools, etc. The construction of these "gated housing" areas makes the enormous social differences in Indian society clear.

Wild settlements are forming on the undeveloped open spaces between the closed residential areas. Further urban substructures arise there without regulation by the administration.

economy

The headquarters of the global IT company HCL is located in Noida , as well as a CD and DVD factory for the storage media manufacturer Moser Baer India and a subsidiary as a development center for the graphics software manufacturer Adobe Inc.

A number of large IT service providers (e.g. Accenture , Steria , Wipro ) and financial service providers (e.g. MetLife ) have also settled there. Due to the rapid development of the service industry, the Noida area has already been expanded to the south. The southern part is called Greater Noida .

Also in the south of the area of Greater Noida was Buddh International Circuit built in the 2011 to 2013 the Formula 1 -race Indian Grand Prix was held.
