Anja Althaus (born September 3, 1982 in Magdeburg ) is a former German handball player .

Career

Althaus began playing handball at the age of eight in the youth of SC Magdeburg and switched to the second division HC Niederndodeleben at the age of 16. In 2000, the 1.77 m tall runner accepted an offer from Bundesliga club DJK / MJC Trier and played there for six years. In 2003 she won the German championship with the "Miezen" and was one of the best district players in the Bundesliga. For the 2007/08 season Althaus made another career leap and switched to the Danish top club Viborg HK , with which she won several national and international titles. In the summer of 2012 she moved to the Bundesliga club Thuringian HC , which she left after the 2013/14 season and joined the Macedonian club ŽRK Vardar SCBT . In the summer of 2017 she joined the Hungarian association Győri ETO KC . After the 2017/18 season, she ended her career.

Anja Althaus was a national player for the German national team . She took part in the European Championships in 2004 , 2006 , 2008 , 2010 , 2012 and 2014 as well as in the World Championships in 2005 , 2007 (bronze), 2009 , 2011 , 2013 , and also in the Olympic Games in 2008 and reached 11th place.

With 243 international matches, Althaus played the fourth most international matches for the German national team after Grit Jurack , Michaela Erler and Silvia Schmitt .

Private

Althaus is in a relationship with the Danish handball player Nicolai Hansen from ThSV Eisenach .
