The north point of North Rhine-Westphalia is surrounded by greenery on a moorland that was drained in the 19th century and is now used for agriculture as meadow.

From the north point of North Rhine-Westphalia to the Jade Bay on the North Sea coast, the distance is only 100 km, while the state capital Düsseldorf is over 200 km away. With Bremen , Hanover and Hamburg , three state capitals are much closer, Kiel and Schwerin are almost as far away as Düsseldorf, except for a few kilometers. The southern point of the country, located in Kehr (Eifel) , is just under 330 km away.

The north point of North Rhine-Westphalia is 37 meters above sea level. NN.

history

In today's border area there were mainly undivided brands ( commons or nasties) until the 19th century . There, farmers from the various rulers had guardianship and usage rights. Of course, this was often debated at different levels. The kingdoms of Hanover and Prussia regulated their borders on both sides of the Weser in a state treaty (Prussian-Hanover State Treaty of November 25, 1837). Since the common land had not yet been assigned to individual farmers, the exact course of the border could only be determined step by step, only when it could be made visible by the owners through walls or ditches.

In the area of the north point of North Rhine-Westphalia, the partition recession of September 24, 1846, which affected the Wietingsmoor and the Ströher Bruch as common land, was likely to have been decisive. This is the reason that from the north point the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, untypical for Central Europe, runs in a straight line in a south-westerly direction over a length of 7.3 km.

The supposed discovery goes back to an action by the small artist Ingo Oschmann . The district government in Detmold confirmed the "discovery". Literally it said in a corresponding statement of the district government: "The geodesists of my district government have clearly proven: The northernmost point of North Rhine-Westphalia is not in Rheine or Petershagen, but here: at 52 ° 32 north latitude and 8 ° 39 east longitude and thus at the very top North Rhine-Westphalia. (...) "

The state survey office of North Rhine-Westphalia has also noted the northernmost point of the state with these rounded coordinates.

On October 5, 2001, the North North Point of North Rhine-Westphalia was officially inaugurated with a celebration with great interest from the population and the regional and national press.

The Bremen-Bad Oeynhausen long-distance cycle route, the Weser - Lippe train-cycle route and an inner-city cycle route run past the northern point .

At the north point of North Rhine-Westphalia there is a seating group, an information board , a stone table in the shape of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the work of art ZeichenSetzung , which the wood sculptor Klaus Meier-Warnebold created as part of the so-called second LandArt Festival in the Minden-Lübbecke district . It is a nine-part group of sculptures made from robinia trunks. In May 2004 the so-called North Point House was opened there. It offers a versatile multi-purpose room and sanitary facilities. It was built in-house by the Preussisch Ströhen village community.

Exactly above the north point, anchored to the boundary stone with a vertical steel rod, is the sculpture Planet, steel at 52 degrees 31 '53' 'north, (...) on an accessible platform . The artist's idea was to make the north point tangible with this sculpture . However, this put the actual boundary stone somewhat in the shade. The officially calibrated weather station of a private weather service (station type: EPSA) is also located at the north point of North Rhine-Westphalia .

The OWL regional marketing also refers to the northern point when it markets the Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL) region with the slogan "OWL - Ganz oben in NRW", although only parts of the Minden-Lübbecker Land are further north than other parts of North Rhine-Westphalia . This pointing of the peripheral location of OWL in the territorial structure of North Rhine-Westphalia is additionally reinforced with the easternmost point of the state with the (mountain) "Kiekenstein" in Stahle , City of Höxter.

Day lengths

Due to its location, i.e. its relative proximity to the northern polar circle, the north point of North Rhine-Westphalia is the place with the longest day length at the summer solstice, or the shortest day length at the winter solstice: On June 21, the sun sets there at 5:01 am : 55 o'clock up and at 21:52:16 o'clock under, which means a day length of 16 hours, 51 minutes and 39 seconds. In the state capital Düsseldorf the day length on this day is 16 hours 35 minutes and 30 seconds. At the time of the summer solstice, the time between the end and the beginning of civil twilight at the North North Rhine-Westphalia point is 5 ° 29 '(compared to 5 ° 51' in Düsseldorf), the time between the end and the beginning of nautical twilight is 2 ° 43 '(compared to 3 ° 25' Minutes in Düsseldorf). The Astronomical Twilight does not end at this point, because the lower culmination of the sun is at the summer solstice at the NRW North Point -14 ° 02 '.

Others

For comparison, the north point of North Rhine-Westphalia is on the same latitude as the Canadian subarctic island of Weston Island in the southern Hudson Bay , which is already part of the Inuit territory of Nunavut .
