The Haldenwanger Eck (also: Haldenwanger Egg ) is a 1931  m above sea level. NHN high hill in the Allgäu Alps on the border between Bavaria and Vorarlberg , on which the boundary stone 149 is located. This also means the area between Haldenwanger Kopf and Gehrner Berg , on which Germany's southernmost point is located at boundary stone 147 .

On the border between Germany and Austria , in the area of ​​Haldenwanger Eck, there is the border triangle Bavaria  - Tyrol  - Vorarlberg , which is also the southernmost point of the Oberallgäu district in the municipality of Oberstdorf , about 17 kilometers southwest of the town center and not in the municipality further north Haldenwang , as the name might suggest. In the main ridge of the Allgäu Alps , in the headwaters of the Rappenalpenbach (upper reaches of the Stillach ), the Haldenwanger Eck is just under two kilometers south of the Geißhorn ( 2366  m above sea level ), 4 kilometers west of the Biberkopf ( 2599  m above sea level ) - the occasional referred to as the southernmost point of Germany, but 110 meters further north than this - and 400 meters south-southwest of the Trifthütte (formerly Haldenwanger Hütte), the southernmost building in Germany, ( 1742  m above sea level ) on the Haldenwanger Bach. On the Austrian side, the areas of the communities Warth (Vorarlberg) and Steeg (Tyrol) converge to Haldenwanger Eck.

The Haldenwanger Eck, which can only be reached via a mountain tour, is a hill between higher mountains. The southernmost state office in Germany is a few hundred meters south-east at boundary stone 147 at 1883  m above sea level. NHN height and is marked by a granite column with inscriptions. Because of this fact, Oberstdorf is a member of the Zipfelbund . The pillar was built in 1986 on the initiative of the State of Vorarlberg in place of the old boundary stone. The historic stone from 1844 was secured and taken to the Bavarian State Surveying Office .

The southernmost town in Germany, the hamlet of Einödsbach , is 8.3 kilometers northeast of the Haldenwanger Eck. Two kilometers further north is the hamlet of Birgsau , the second southernmost town in Germany. Only residents are allowed to use the access road with motorized vehicles.

etymology

The name is derived from the Old High German words halda (slope) and wang (area).
