The hamlet of Birgsau belongs to the municipality of Oberstdorf . It comprises around ten houses and a chapel in which St. Wendelin is venerated. It is located in the rear Stillachtal , east of the brook , at an altitude of 956  m . The distance to Oberstdorf is approx. 9 km.

In 2008, as the weather service Meteomedia announced , Birgsau was the darkest place in Germany. In the ranking of the hours of sunshine for the sunniest place in Germany, the hamlet landed in last place with 955 hours of sunshine. For comparison: Hiddensee- Dornbusch, 1st place, with 2168 hours of sunshine. Jörg Kachelmann justified this with the location of the Meteomedia's own weather station in the valley ( 47 ° 19 ′ 48 ″  N , 10 ° 16 ′ 12 ″  E ; 953  m above sea level ), where the mountain shadow takes away a lot of sun, especially in the winter months.

history

The hamlet is mentioned for the first time in 1619, two families lived in Birgsau in 1769, and five houses were counted in 1848.

The hamlet of Birgsau can be reached on foot or by bus. The route is closed to cars from the Fellhornbahn near Faistenoy.
