history
General
With the entry of the oldest Vechta sports club, the Vechtaer Turn-Verein from 1888 , the roots of the SFN go back much further in 1923 than in the official founding year of 1921. The example of the Vechtaer Turn-Verein followed in the course of time by two other clubs. In 1957 the Sportfreunde Hagen , a pure football club from the south of the city, and in 2005 the BC Antonianum Vechta , a badminton club, joined the SFN Vechta. Both clubs contributed to the fact that the SFN has developed into the sports club with the largest number of members in the city of Vechta. Chairman of the SC Niedersachsen Vechta was from 1948 to 1951 the mayor of Vechta Anton Cromme . In 2013 the honorary chairman, master baker Josef Grieshop, who headed the SFN from 1969 to 1988, died. Other long-term chairmen of the SFN Vechta were the honorary chairmen August Börgerding (1962–1969) and Georg Hüsing (1988–1996). Since April 25, 2006, the Vechta notary and lawyer Boris Radau has presided over the SFN Vechta.
Handball
The handball players from SFN Vechta qualified for the DHB Women's Cup for the first time in 2009 . In the first round the team lost to the regional league team TV Walsum-Aldenrade from Duisburg with 19:30. In the league game, the SFN-Women I played in the Oberliga Nordsee and became champions there in 2014 and 2016. The team rose to the 3rd division. The first women's team of the SFN reached a good 6th place (out of 12 teams) in the 3rd division women (handball) 2016/17 Season North as a climber . For the 2017/18 season, the SFN was regrouped in the 3rd League Season West.
The 2nd women's team of the Sportfreunde Lower Saxony has played in the Weser-Ems Süd regional class since the 2015/16 season. The first men's team has been playing in the Weser-Ems (South) regional class since the 2016/17 season. Until the end of the 2016/17 season, the home arena was the sports hall in the north school center on Lattweg in Vechta . At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, the handball department of the SFN moved with a large part of its training operations and the entire point game operation from the so-called "Halle North" to the so-called "Sporthalle West" of the Christophorus School on the Vechtaer Marsch street.

The footballers of the Sportfreunde were among the founding members of the amateur league Oldenburg / Hunte in 1949 , from which they had to relegate four years later. In 1955 they were promoted again before the team could celebrate the championship title in 1960. In the promotion round, however, the Vechta failed to Stern Emden and Sparta Nordhorn . After the failure, the successful team disintegrated and four years later it went down to the Oldenburg / Huntegau district league . 1973 followed the descent into the district class, which followed in 1977 the promotion. In the promotion season, the Sportfreunde became runner-up behind Rot-Weiß Damme . In 1979 the team was promoted to the Weser / Ems regional league , where the Sportfreunde were third straight away. In 1984 it went back down to the district league before the team had to go down to the district class in 1995 after a league reform. Four years later, the rise succeeded before the early 2000s brought a sporting crash. With just one point, the Sportfreunde 2001 had to relegate to the district class, where the team was passed through to the district league the following season. In the 2005/06 season the Sportfreunde returned to the district league before the team reached their sporting low point in 2008 when they were relegated to the 1st district class.
After the direct resurgence in the 2009/10 season as champions of the 1st district class Vechta, the sports fans had to five years later in the 2013/14 season as bottom of the table with only three points behind the saving 14th place in the table and a goal difference of good for a relegated 44:50 descend again into the 1st district class Vechta. In the following season 2014/15 the championship in the 1st district class Vechta and the associated immediate return to the district league Vechta succeeded in a superior manner with 142: 21 goals and 81 points. For the 2015/16 season the Sportfreunde were able to win the former professional Paul Jaschke as coach, who led the Sportfreunde to third place after a successful first half of the season. In the 2016/2017 season, the first team made it to second place and qualified for the play-off for promotion. This she won 1-0 against the runner-up of the district league Cloppenburg, the SV Molbergen, in the neutral position of the TuS Emstekerfeld and rose for the 2017/18 season after eleven years at the district level again in the district league Weser-Ems 4. The home stadium is the Bergkeller stadium .
