Ajax København ( German : Ajax Copenhagen ) is a handball club from the Danish capital Copenhagen . With nine championships, Ajax is the third most successful club in Danish men's handball after KIF Kolding and the Handelsstandens Gymnastikforening. The first men's team in the second-class 1st division , while the women's team competes in the first-class Damehåndboldligaen .
history
The club was founded in 1934 as Idrætsforeningen Ajax (IF Ajax) and was able to win its first Danish championship three years later. Further titles were won in 1942, 1944, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1952, 1953 and 1964, when Ajax was also able to win the first ever cup competition. In 1964/65 they qualified through the championship for the European Champion's Cup, which had been introduced a few years earlier, and reached the semi-finals there.
In the following seasons, the club had to relegate several times and spent in the 1970s and 1980s only one season (1972) in the top national division. In 1984 Ajax stood in the cup final against city rivals Gladsaxe HG, which was lost at 18:19. Since Gladsaxe was also Danish champion, reaching the cup final entitled to participate in the European Cup Winners' Cup (handball) 1984/85 , where they were eliminated in the 2nd round. The return to the first class succeeded in 1994, whereby one belonged again to the first division more regularly until 2008 (eleven of the 15 seasons in this period). The greatest success was the runner-up in the 1996/97 season, which also led to the club's participation in the European Cup , which is the last to this day .
In 1989 IF Ajax merged with the multiple Danish champions in women's handball, the Kvindelig Idrætsforening .
The women's team from Ajax København was promoted to the Damehåndboldligaen in 2017.
