The MTV 1860 Altlandsberg is a German sports club from Altlandsberg , which is best known for its women's handball team, which played several seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga .

history

The club was founded by Theodor Frühauf on August 24, 1860, making it one of the oldest sports clubs in Brandenburg . In the beginning there was only the gymnastics department in the club. Running and fistball were not included in the range until the beginning of the 20th century . The first major event took place in 1862, with 200 participants from the region. After the Second World War , sports operations were resumed under the name Grün-Weiß Altlandsberg . The next renaming took place in 1950 in BSG Traktor Altlandsberg . At that time it was still the male handball players who ensured success. The male A youth won the GDR runner-up in 1956 and 1957. The men played in the second highest division for three years.

The association currently has over 550 members.

After German reunification, the club name was changed to the founding version. Due to a mistake, the year of foundation was not placed at the end of the name, as is common practice, but in the middle of the name.

In its early days, the MTV suffered from the lack of a suitable gym. Therefore, the association was dependent on the innkeepers making their halls available to the association. For this reason, the desire to build their own gym arose early on, nobody suspected that this would take over 100 years. In 1956, the athletes built an illuminated small field facility in the "Grund", which is still in use today. In 1982 the school's small gym was inaugurated. These two facilities were repaired in 1997. In 1999 the Erlengrundhalle was completed.

Departments

The largest departments are: handball , soccer , cycling , basketball , volleyball and table tennis .

Handball

The female handball players achieved their greatest success so far. In 2007 they rose from the Oberliga, via the Regionalliga, directly to the 2nd Bundesliga . However, they were unable to stay there and were relegated straight away in 2008 . In 2010 they were promoted again to the 2nd Bundesliga, where they reached second place and thus had the right to promotion to the 1st Bundesliga, which the MTV refused. In the same year, the men were able to rise to the Baltic Sea Spree League . In 2012 the women were relegated to the 3rd division. In 2013 the men also made it to the 3rd division, so that in the 2013/14 season both the female and male handball players played in the 3rd division. In 2014, the men were relegated to the league as bottom of the table. In the 15/16 season the women's tables were third in the 3rd division and in the 16/17 season the target was promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga, which could not be achieved with a renewed third place.

On May 19, 2019, the women who were registered in the 3rd division up to this point withdrew their registration in the named division. Thus the MTV handball women are now playing in the Oberliga-Ostsee-Spree. This decision was made by the Board of Management due to the lack of structural, personnel and financial requirements.
