The Police Sports Association e. V. Recklinghausen is a sports club in North Rhine-Westphalia , whose women's handball team played in the 2nd Bundesliga North until spring 2010 .

history

PSV Recklinghausen was founded in 1920. From the beginning handball was especially cultivated, but back then as field handball on the soccer field. The home play area of the field handball players was the sports field on the Cäcilienhöhe, which is used today by the club's footballers and is located behind the police quarters. As early as 1934, the men's handball team was promoted to the district league, at that time the second highest division.  It was to be 1939 before they were promoted to the highest class - the Gauliga Westfalen . As a newcomer, PSV secured the title of Westphalia champion at the end of the 1939/40 season and played for the German championship. After two less successful years, PSV Recklinghausen was able to win the Westphalia Championship again in 1943 and 1944 and play in the final round of the German championship. Here, however, was the final destination in the intermediate round. In the 1950s the PSV handball players were able to build on their successes and in 1953 rose again to the top German division - the Oberliga. Here they became Westphalian runner-up in 1960. Audience numbers of over 1000 were not uncommon at the time. Until 1971 one could assert oneself in the upper league, which now represents the second highest class after the introduction of the handball Bundesliga in 1966. After that, field handball lost its importance and was gradually replaced by indoor handball.

The club has around 1,800 members, including the handball department around 500. PSV plays its home games in the North Sports Hall, which can seat 480 spectators. Already in the 2001/02 season the PSV handball players gave a short guest appearance in the 2nd Bundesliga South , but where the promotion with 6:26 points was followed by an immediate relegation. The return to the 2nd Bundesliga South succeeded in 2005. In spring 2010, the club announced that from the 2010/11 season onwards, they would no longer play in the 2nd Bundesliga and would provide a team for the third division . The 2010/11 season ended with a third place in the table.
