The Frankfurter Handball Club eV (FHC) is a women's handball club from Frankfurt (Oder) . It was founded in 1994 through a merger of the then first-class handball department of the BFV Frankfurt (Oder) and the then second-class handball department of the SV Blau-Weiss Frankfurt (Oder). The BFV Frankfurt (Oder) was in turn a successor club to the ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) , which was dissolved in 1990 and whose handball section had one of the strongest women's handball teams in the GDR in the 1980s.

Club data

The FHC is only active in women's handball. In addition to the first team, which played in the 1st Bundesliga for many years until 2013 , there are six junior teams in all age groups and a 2nd team. The association currently has around 150 members, the president is Wolfgang Pohl . The home games of the first team are played in the Brandenburg Hall , which can accommodate 2500 spectators.

history

The Frankfurt handball club was founded in 1994 and emerged from the merger of the two handball departments of the clubs BFV and Blau-Weiß Frankfurt (Oder). The handball players of the BFV for their part went back to the SV Volkspolizei Vorwärts Leipzig, founded in 1951, which was first delegated to Berlin in 1953 and its handball department to Frankfurt (Oder) in 1969. As ASK Vorwärts Berlin , the handball section initially only took part in the men's division. You could win four GDR championship titles in field handball , which was still played at the time, and one GDR championship title in indoor handball. After moving to Frankfurt (Oder) and the corresponding renaming to ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder), the men's team was able to win three GDR championship titles and in 1975 the European Cup. The women's team, which was continuously built up from 1972, was one of the strongest teams in GDR women's handball in the 1980s. The GDR championship title was secured six times alone. In addition, he won the IHF Cup in the 1989/90 season .

With the reunification of Germany , handball in Frankfurt (Oder) was also exposed to a constantly changing environment. However, he was still able to benefit from the combination of the Bundeswehr support base on the site of the former army sports club Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) and the existing sports school , which means that the club repeatedly succeeds in integrating players from its own youth into the first team. Up until the 1999/2000 season, the club was able to compete in the women's first handball league and was always among the top five teams in Germany until the relegation season. Due to major financial problems, however, important players could no longer be held and the club was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga for the first time since its existence in the 1999/2000 season . After a season of sporting consolidation, which ended with third place, the FHC team was able to celebrate their return to the first women's handball league in the 2001/02 season. In the 2003/04 season he even won the German championship. In the following years, the club almost always placed for the play-offs that have now been introduced , but a place in the top three was no longer successful. After the 2012/13 season, on July 2, 2013, the board of the association announced in an official press release that it had filed for insolvency . As a result of the bankruptcy, the Bundesliga team was dissolved. However, the second team , which was already playing in the 3rd division at that time, was reinforced with former first division players in the following season 2013/14 and was led as the first team from the 2014/15 season. Since then, the game has continued in the 3rd division. In addition, the FHC has various youth teams in play.
