The women's handball FDGB Cup was held for the 14th time in the 1983/84 season. At the final tournament in Frankfurt (Oder) , the hosts from ASK Vorwärts won their third title after 1981 and 1982 . They profited from the defeat of SC Magdeburg in the last game against SC Leipzig .

In the first and second main round, which were played in the knockout system , the teams from the GDR league and qualified district cup representatives took part. In both rounds, the district representatives had a home advantage over the GDR league teams. From the third main round, there were back and forth games and the ten teams from the GDR upper league were added. After the fourth main round, the last five teams then determined the cup winners in a final tournament.
