The men's handball FDGB Cup was held for the 14th time in the 1983/84 season. After winning the championship, SC Magdeburg secured its third undefeated title after 1977 and 1978 at the finals tournament in Rostock .

In the first and second main round, which was played in the knockout system , the teams from the handball GDR league and qualified district cup representatives took part. In both rounds, the district representatives had a home advantage over the GDR league teams. From the third main round there were back and forth games and the ten teams from the handball GDR upper league were added and were drawn to the winners of the second main round. In the fourth main round, the five best-placed teams of the past league season were set so that they did not meet. After this round, the last five teams determined the cup winners in a final tournament.

For the best possible preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics , the selection players Holger Winselmann (SC Magdeburg) were delegated to SC Empor Rostock and Stephan Hauck (SC Dynamo Berlin) to SC Magdeburg at the beginning of March until the end of the FDGB Cup rounds .
