The men's handball FDGB Cup was held for the 7th time in the 1976/77 season and for the first time teams from the handball league took part. The SC Magdeburg made loss-point free for the finals tournament in its own hall, the double of league and cup perfect. They beat ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt / O in the last final game of the unbeaten teams . With SC Dynamo Berlin , one of the five sports club representatives was eliminated in the first main round against the second representative of Wismut Aue .

The respective representatives of the districts of Schwerin , Neubrandenburg , Leipzig , Dresden and Suhl could not qualify for the handball FDGB Cup 1976/77 through qualifying games.

In the first main round, which was played in the knockout system , all qualified teams took part and the district representatives enjoyed home advantage over higher-class teams. From the second main round, the competition continued with home and away games. The draw was made according to the most territorial aspects possible. After the 3rd main round, the last five teams then determined the cup winners in a final tournament.
