Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (born February 11, 1991 in Mont-Saint-Hilaire ) is a Canadian American football player on the position of guard . He currently plays with the Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL). With them he won the Super Bowl LIV .

Early years

Duvernay-Tardif went to high school in his native Mont-Saint-Hilaire . He later attended McGill University in Montreal , where he studied medicine.

NFL Draft and CFL Draft

Duvernay-Tardif was selected 19th in the third round of the 2014 Canadian Football League draft by the Calgary Stampeders . In the 2014 NFL Draft , he was selected in the sixth round in 200th place by the Kansas City Chiefs .

NFL

On May 14, 2014, he signed a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. Duvernay-Tardif has mostly been in the starting line-up since the 2015 season . In February 2017, he renewed his contract with the Chiefs for a five-year contract for $ 42.36 million. After the 2019 season , he won Super Bowl LIV with the Chiefs .

Personal

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is the grandson of the former Canadian politician Guy Tardif . From 2014 to 2018, Duvernay-Tardif continued his professional career during the offseason with his medical studies, which he successfully completed. His request to wear the title "MD" ( medical doctor ) on the jersey was rejected by the NFL. Duvernay-Tardif helped fight the disease at a Canadian hospital following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic . In July 2020, he announced that he would not play the 2020 NFL season. He made use of a special regulation that allows players to suspend the season because of the pandemic while foregoing a large part of their regular salary. The reason he gave was that he could "not allow himself to spread this virus in society just because I want to do the sport I love."
