U Sports (1969-2001 Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union , short CIAU ; 2001-2016 Canadian Interuniversity Sport , short CIS , French Sport Interuniversitaire Canadien , short SIC ) is Canada's national university sports organization , in which most of the country's universities are in the form of a Voluntary association. The organization was founded in 1961, but goes back to the much older Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union . Its equivalent in the field of Canadian colleges is the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association ( CCAA for short ). Some institutions are members of both organizations in different sports areas.
Funding
The members do not award any sports scholarships , but there is the option of academic scholarships or grants for athletes who cannot finance their studies independently. For the academic year 2002/03, the average grant for athletes, according to U Sports, was 522 Canadian dollars for men and 311 Canadian dollars for women. The highest average was among ice hockey players, who were subsidized with an average of $ 1,108.
In addition, the participating universities offer funding programs under which alumni , parents or companies can donate money that ultimately covers the athletes' tuition and living expenses. The U Sport has no prescribed rules as to how much money the universities can distribute through private support. However, because the US National Collegiate Athletic Association , unlike U Sports, distributes full- and part-time scholarships , many Canadian high school athletes are still moving to the United States to begin fully funded studies.
The Canadian junior ice hockey organization CHL supports players who switch to a U Sports university after at least two years in major junior hockey . CHL players are also not allowed to accept or own an NCAA scholarship. NCAA students, on the other hand, are allowed to take part in a CHL training camp for a maximum of 48 hours, but cannot play in any game.
Members
In 2008, 52 universities were organized in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology was accepted as the last member .
The member universities are organized in four regional associations, which in some sports are also referred to as conferences based on the US National Collegiate Athletic Association and can be divided into divisions in heavily frequented sports such as basketball or Canadian football :
- Atlantic University Sport (AUS)
-
Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA)
- Central Division
- Great Plains Division
- Pacific Division
-
Ontario University Athletics (OUA)
- East Division
- West Division
- Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ)
Since not all conferences organize all sports, some universities participate in several conferences depending on the sport.
