Patrick "Pat" Stewart Onstad (born January 13, 1968 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian soccer goalkeeper . Onstad has been with DC United since the 2011 season and is also the team's assistant coach.

Career

Youth and club career

Onstad got his first football experience while studying at the University of British Columbia in his hometown of Vancouver. In 1987, after graduating from college , he joined the Vancouver 86ers , who were then playing in the Canadian Soccer League . From 1988 to 1989 he played in the same league for Winnipeg Fury . After the Furys, he played with his third CSL team, Toronto Blizzard . In 1992 he returned to the Winnipeg Fury and became Champion and Goalkeeper of the Year.

After the dissolution of the Canadian Soccer League, Onstad moved to the A-League , the second highest soccer league in the USA. In 1994 he played for the Toronto Rockets and in 1995 for Montreal Impact . With the Edmonton Drillers he played indoor soccer in 1996 , before he was back in the A-League in 1997 with the Toronto Lynx .

Pat Onstand moved again to the Rochester Raging Rhinos , where he played from 1998 to 1999 and from 2001 to 2002. In 2000 he played for the Scottish club Dundee United , but was not used there.

Onstad at Houston Dynamo (2009)

In 2003 he moved to the MLS for the first time and became a regular goalkeeper at the San José Earthquakes . After their move to Houston and the conversion to Houston Dynamo , he now plays for the Texans. After the 2010 season, his contract was not renewed and he came into the MLS Re-Entry Draft. There he was not selected by any team and was initially without a club.

On December 21, 2010, he announced his retirement and became the new assistant coach at DC United . On February 17, 2011 Onstad was added to the squad, as the two goalkeepers Steve Cronin and Bill Hamid were injured. On May 31, 2011, he returned to his duties as an assistant coach.

National team

Onstad played for Canada at the 1987 World Youth Championship in Chile . But he was not used in any game and had to give preference to Craig Forrest . The year before, he was able to win the CONCACAF U-20 championship in Trinidad and Tobago with the team .

His first international match for the Canadian national soccer team he gave on February 18, 1988 against the national soccer team of Bermuda . For over twenty years he was in the goal of the Canadians. He made a total of 57 international matches. His last international match was against Argentina on May 24, 2010. Before that, he was in goal for the last time in August 2008.
