The University of Laval ( French Université Laval , ULAVAL) is one of the oldest universities on the American continent, it is one of the largest research universities in Canada and is located in the city of Québec .
history
The year of foundation is given as 1663; the leadership was initially incumbent on the French-Canadian clergy . Today it is a state university, which is largely funded by the Ministry of Education of the Province of Québec . It is also the oldest French-speaking higher education institution in America and the sixth oldest university in Canada.
founding
The first bishop of Québec, François de Montmorency-Laval , who called himself "de Laval", founded the seminary of Québec in New France with the permission of Louis XIV . With royal approval it was renamed "Laval University" in 1852. In 1878 the University of Laval opened a branch in Montréal , and in 1919 it became an independent University of Montreal . The University of Laval developed into a center for all education in French on the North American continent.
Today's university management
In 1991, a bicameral body was set up to manage the university. It consists of the Academic Council and a management group. The rector is elected every five years and can only be re-elected once.

The campus
The university area extends over 1.2 km², on which there are 30 building complexes and pavilions. These are connected with a 10 km long pedestrian tunnel system. The main purpose of tunneling under the university is to facilitate the mobility of university members during the severe winter in Québec . Similar structures can be found in Montréal , Toronto and other universities in Canada.
The four student residences have a room capacity for 2,300 students, and there is also a large social and economic complex, the Alphonse-Desjardins / Maurice-Pollack building. In addition, the university owns individual buildings in the city of Québec, with which the connection to the population is to be maintained, including the School of Architecture and the School of "Visual Arts".
Research and international cooperation
Research and international cooperation play an important role in fulfilling the educational mandate. The university has 125 research institutions, which are staffed by around 1,200 professors . The university is also the primary partner for the Canadian International Development Center.
The university maintains exchange programs with the University of Mannheim , TU Munich , University of Passau , FU Berlin and the WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management .

In 2011 the university was studying 399 subjects and programs, over 40,000 students with a graduate education goal. Of these students, more than 6,000 were foreign students and over 1,000 were from other provinces in Canada. In 2011, the number of degree courses and the teaching staff were made up as follows:
