Vincent Tran tam Tinh

Vincent Tran tam Tinh (born April 19, 1929 in Nam Định ) is a Vietnamese-Canadian classical archaeologist and clergyman.

Life

Tran tam Tinh was born in Vietnam as the only son of a Catholic family and first attended the local school and then the Pontifical Seminary Saint-Albert le Grand in Nam Định. After graduating from school, he studied Latin and Vietnamese literature at the Collège My Duc in Thái Bình , then theology again in Nam Định. He continued his education at the premises of the Dominicans in Hong Kong and then in Rome , where he at the 1960 Pontifical Lateran University to the doctor utriusque iuris ( "both rights", ie the civil law and canon law ) doctorate was.

During this time he also turned to history and archeology and wrote his second dissertation with Lilly Kahil at the University of Friborg in Switzerland . In this work he examined the Isis cult in Pompeii . He then went to Paris to the Center national de la recherche scientifique and at the same time attended events at the École pratique des hautes études . He also volunteered in the working group around Pierre Devambez at the Louvre .

In 1964 he finally moved to Canada , where he worked as a lecturer and adjunct professor at Laval University in Québec . In 1994 he retired there. In addition to his scientific work, Tinh was involved in charitable projects in his country of origin, Vietnam, and was a founding member of the aid organization Fraternité Vietnam, established in 1977 .

Researches

A special focus of Tran tam Tinh's work is the worship of oriental deities and especially the goddess Isis in the ancient world. He devoted several important studies to this topic. He contributed some articles to the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae and was a representative of Canada on the lexicon scientific committee. In addition, he presented, among other things, studies of antique oil lamps and mosaics .

Tran was involved in the excavations of Jean des Gagniers , Lilly Kahil and René Ginouvès in the ancient Cypriot city of Soloi , where he uncovered an important basilica and published it in 1985. He also carried out excavations in the Casa dei Cervi in Herculaneum , the results of which were published in 1988.
