Anthony Hitchens (* 10. June 1992 in Lorain , Ohio ) is an American American football poker players on the position of the linebackers . He currently plays for the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL , with whom he won the Super Bowl LIV .

college

Hitchens played college football at the University of Iowa for four years . In his first two seasons (2010 and 2011) he did not get a lot of playing time and only managed 9 tackles in 2010 and 25 tackles in 2011. In 2012 and 2013, Hitchens was significantly more productive and achieved 124 tackles and 112 tackles for his college in his final season.

NFL

Dallas Cowboys

Hitchens was selected 119th in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys . The Cowboys brought him in to get more depth in the linebacker position, as they had to deal with numerous injuries in this position last year. Nevertheless, his selection came as a surprise to some experts in the fourth round, because the Hitchens had classified them as a seven-round talent in the run-up to the draft. The Cowboys Hitchens signed a four-year contract for 2,655,000 US dollars . Just a month after the draft, star linebacker Sean Lee was seriously injured in a team activity and later missed the entire 2014 NFL season due to this injury . The injury to the regular player ensured that Hitchens got significantly more playing time in his rookie season than one could have expected at the time of the draft. He was used in all 16 games of the regular season and was able to book 75 tackles and one interception for the cowboys at the end of the season .

In his second professional season ( 2015 ), Hitchens was again used in all 16 games and scored 67 tackles and his first two sacks in the NFL. In 2016 , Rolando McClain was banned from playing 10 games for a drug offense before the start of the season, which allowed Hitchens to continue to get plenty of playing time with the Cowboys. In 2016 he also played in all regular season games and was able to set a new personal best with 78 tackles. He also scored 1.5 sacks for the cowboys. In 2017 , Hitchens went into his final year of his rookie contract. However, the season did not start as planned for Hitchens, he injured himself in the pre-season games. Initially it was feared that he could be out for the whole season, but then it turned out that he would only be missing for a few weeks. Ultimately, Hitchens made his comeback in Week 5 of the regular season and was able to play all of the remaining 12 games. Hitchens had his most productive year in 2017 and despite four missed games, he was able to achieve a new personal best with 84 tackles. He also forced a fumble . After the season, Hitchens became a free agent for the first time in his career .

Kansas City Chiefs

With his achievements in the previous season, Hitchens was able to convince the Kansas City Chiefs , so that they signed him in the offseason before the 2018 season . Hitchens signed a five-year contract for $ 45 million. In 2018, Hitchens achieved more than 100 tackles for the first time in his career. With 135 tackles and a forced fumble, he had a very good first year with the Chiefs. 2019 was followed by a solid year for Hitchens. He was able to achieve 88 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble for the Missouri franchise . In the subsequent playoffs , the Chiefs and Hitchens managed the big hit and they could move into Super Bowl LIV . In the Super Bowl they met the San Francisco 49ers . The Chiefs won the Super Bowl and were able to celebrate another championship 50 years after their last success ( Super Bowl IV ). Hitchens scored 11 tackles in the Chiefs' three playoff games.

The Hitchens contract slowly became a problem for the Chiefs, as they had to pay a lot of money to keep their star players Patrick Mahomes , Tyreek Hill and Chris Jones long-term . Hitchens had two solid years with the Chiefs, but still couldn't take the hoped-for next big step that would justify the $ 12.5 million cap hit . With his $ 12.5 million cap hit for the 2020 season , Hitchens was the fourth most expensive inside linebacker in the league, only Bobby Wagner , Myles Jack and CJ Mosley put more strain on their respective teams' salary caps in 2020.
