James Eric Berry (* 29. December 1988 in Fairburn , Georgia ) is an American American football poker players in the National Football League (NFL). He last played for the Kansas City Chiefs as safety .

college

Berry showed his great athletic talent in high school . He not only played football in various positions, but also excelled as a track and field athlete . He attended the University of Tennessee and, like his father James before him and his two brothers Elliott and Evan after him , played college football for their team, the volunteers . He has received numerous awards for his achievements, including the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award for the best defensive back in college football.

NFL

In the 2010 NFL Draft , he was selected in the 1st round as 5th overall by the Kansas City Chiefs . He signed a six-year contract worth 60 million US dollars , becoming the rookie the highest-paid safety in the league. He ran in his first season in all games as a starter and was called for his good performance in the Pro Bowl .

The following season was over for him after just one game due to a torn cruciate ligament . In 2012 and 2013 he played again at the usual high level and the Pro Bowl nominations number two and three followed.

In 2014, Berry, who was complaining of chest pain, was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma . After successful chemotherapy , Berry was able to return to top-class sport in 2015 and was called back to the Pro Bowl this season. He also received the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award .

In the first game of the season 2017 he tore his Achilles tendon. Only on December 13, 2018 in the narrow 28:29 loss to the LA Chargers did he return to the field.
