Darren Lee Sproles (* 20th June 1983 in Waterloo , Iowa ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of the running backs or the Return Specialists . He last played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Philadelphia Eagles with whom he also won the Super Bowl LII . He holds several individual records in the National Football League and was also under contract with the San Diego Chargers and the New Orleans Saints .

college

Sproles, also a talented and successful athlete in his youth , attended Kansas State University and played college football for their team, the Wildcats, between 2001 and 2004 as a successful running back . He was able to run a total of 4,979 yards and achieve 45 touchdowns and to date holds 23 school records.

NFL

San Diego Chargers

Sproles was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft as the 130th player . Already in his rookie season he was used in 15 games, but as the third running back behind the two stars LaDainian Tomlinson and Michael Turner, he only got a little playing time. He was employed as a return specialist much more often and with significantly better performance.

Due to an ankle fracture , he was sidelined for the entire 2006 season. In 2007 he got his first two touchdowns, namely a kickoff return and a punt return. He was the first player ever to do this.

In the following seasons, too, he showed outstanding performance, especially as a return specialist, and was able to run well over 1000 yards. As early as 2009 he was elected as a special teamer by fans, ex-players and media representatives for the 50th anniversary of the franchise in the San Diego Chargers 50th Anniversary Team .

New Orleans Saints

In 2011 he signed with the New Orleans Saints a four-year contract for 14 million dollars in guaranteed 6 million. He also performed consistently well at his new place of work, in 2011 he was able to improve the record for most yards in one season to 2,696. In 2012 he set another record with 15 passports caught in the play-offs .

Philadelphia Eagles

In 2014, Sproles moved to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a five-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft . Here, too, Sproles was able to maintain his high level, and so he was appointed to the Pro Bowl as a special teamer and running back in 2014, 2015 and 2016 .

In July 2016, Sproles extended his contract until the end of the 2017 season.

On September 24, 2017, Sproles was placed on the Injured Reserve List with a ruptured cruciate ligament and a broken arm and was out for the remainder of the 2017 season . In 2018 he only played six games due to an injury. In July 2019 Sproles signed a new one-year contract with the Eagles.

After the 2019 season ended for him in November due to an injury, he announced his retirement from active sport on December 21, 2019.
