Ajayi was selected as the 149th player in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins . In his rookie season, Ajayi was used by the Dolphins as a backup behind Lamar Miller . In nine games he ran 187 yards and scored a touchdown . After the NFL season , Miller moved to the Houston Texans , Ajayi then became the new starting running back of the Dolphins, he prevailed in the off-season against the newcomer Arian Foster . In the NFL season in 2016 , his first year as a starting running back, Ajayi made his breakthrough in the NFL. With 1,272 running yards, he was the fourth best running back in the league in terms of yards run. Ajayi also scored 8 touchdowns for his team in the season. Ajayi was instrumental in ensuring that the Dolphins reached it again after eight years without a play-off participation. In the wildcard round (first round) they were eliminated at 12:30 against the Pittsburgh Steelers . Ajayi was elected to the 2017 Pro Bowl for his outstanding performance during the season . In the 2017 season Ajayi could not call up his performances from the previous year for the Dolphins. In seven games he ran an average of only 3.4 yards and scored no touchdown. The Miami franchise surprisingly traded Ajayi to the Philadelphia Eagles shortly before the end of the trade deadline . In return, the Dolphins received a four-round pick from the Eagles.

On February 4, 2018, Ajayi and his Eagles won Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots 41:33. It was the first Superbowl win for the Philadelphia Eagles and Jay Ajayi.
