Peter Clay "Pete" Carroll (born September 15, 1951 in San Francisco ) is an American American football coach. Since 2010 he has been Head Coach of the Seattle Seahawks in the National Football League (NFL), with which he won Super Bowl XLVIII .
Player career
Carroll played in his youth for the Redwood High School in Larkspur , as well as for the colleges Marin and Pacific (all California) predominantly on the position of the free safety .
Coaching career
Early stations
Pete Carroll began his coaching career in 1973 as an assistant coach for Pacific College. Other coaching stations in the college area were Arkansas , Iowa State , Ohio State , North Carolina State and again Pacific, each in different positions as assistant coach.
NFL (1984-1999)
His first coaching position in the NFL was 1984 Defensive Backs Coach with the Buffalo Bills . He then worked from 1985 to 1989 in the same position for the Minnesota Vikings . He worked for the New York Jets for four years as a defensive coordinator before being promoted to head coach there in 1994. However, after six wins and ten defeats, he was released after one season. After another two years as a defensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers , the New England Patriots hired him as head coach. He led the Patriots to a division title ( 1997 season ) and two play-off appearances (1997 and 1998 ). After the Patriots missed the play-offs in the 1999 season, he was fired.
USC Trojans (2000-2009)
In 2000 he took over the post of head coach of the Trojans , the football team at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles . In the nine years under Pete Carroll, the USC Trojans won 97 of their 116 games, took seven conference wins, and were named the best college team in the United States in 2003 and 2004. 2004, the Trojans defeated in the BCS National Championship Game , the Oklahoma Sooners 55:19 and set with Matt Leinart the Most Valuable Player (MVP). However, 14 wins, one conference title and the 2004 BCS National Championship Game were revoked due to irregularities involving the then player Reggie Bush .
Seattle Seahawks (2010 – present), Super Bowl win
On January 11, 2010, Pete Carroll was introduced as Head Coach and Vice President of the Seattle Seahawks . In his first season in Seattle , the Seahawks won the NFC West Division despite a negative record of seven wins and nine losses and thus qualified for the play-offs. Here they managed a victory over the favorite reigning Super Bowl winner, the New Orleans Saints , before a loss to the Chicago Bears ended the season. In the 2012 season they again qualified for the final round of the Super Bowl with rookie quarterback Russell Wilson and a record of 11: 5. After a win against the Washington Redskins , after a loss to the Atlanta Falcons in the round of eight was the last stop. 2013 was Carroll's best season to date. With 13 wins and three losses, he won the division in the NFC West and after successes in the play-offs over the New Orleans Saints and the San Francisco 49ers he was with the Seattle Seahawks champions of the National Football Conference . The Seahawks qualified for the Super Bowl XLVIII . After a superior 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos , Pete Carroll won his first Super Bowl on February 2, 2014. This title is the greatest success in the history of the Seahawks to date. On February 1, 2015, the Seahawks played again for the Super Bowl with Pete Carroll, but lost the game against the New England Patriots with 24:28.
On July 26, 2016, Carroll extended his contract until 2019. At the beginning of the 2018 season he was able to achieve the 91st victory with the Seahawks, which made him the most victorious head coach in franchise history. On December 24, 2018, his contract was extended to 2021.

Personal
Carroll was born Peter Clay Carroll on September 15, 1951 in San Francisco . He is the son of Rita Ban and James Edward "Jim" Carroll. His maternal grandparents are from Šibenik ( Croatia ) and his paternal great-grandparents are from Ireland . Pete Carroll is married to Glena, has two sons and a daughter and four grandchildren. His sons also work as assistant coaches for the Seattle Seahawks.
