Jonathan Robert Ryan (born November 26, 1981 ) is a Canadian Canadian football and American football player . He played in the position of punter for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League (CFL).

Childhood and youth

Ryan was born and raised in Regina , Saskatchewan . His high school was the Sheldon-Williams Collegiate, where he played on the positions running back , kicker and punter on the football team. He later attended the University of Regina , where he held the positions of punter and wide receiver from 2000 to 2003. There he was an important performer of the football team, the Regina Rams, and was voted best special teams player , top scorer and most valuable player. Ryan was also the track team engaged the University of Regina.

Professional career

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

In 2004 the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from the Canadian Football League (CFL) drafted Ryan as a punter and wide receiver in the third round of the Canadian College Draft . In his rookie season, he became the second best punter of the 2004 season . In his second season he was the CFL's best punter with an average of 50.6 yards.

Green Bay Packers

In January 2006, Ryan moved to the National Football League after agreeing on a contract with the Green Bay Packers . He is the third player from Saskatchewan in the NFL, after Arnie Weinmeister and Rueben Mayes . In 2006 his father developed cancer and died two days before a Packers game. Ryan decided to play anyway and his teammates then chose him for receiving the Ed Block Courage Award for his courage and sportsmanship. Ryan was released from the Packers on September 1, 2008.

Seattle Seahawks

On September 9, 2008, Ryan signed a contract with the Seattle Seahawks . In Week 6 of the 2009 season, he threw a 42-yard pass in the game against the Arizona Cardinals and received a quarterback rating of 119 for the entire 2009 season. Following that season, he was awarded a six-year contract for $ 9.1 million. In addition, he was elected to the Pro Bowl . In 2010, Ryan was injured after attempting to tackle a punt returner .

On February 2, 2014 Ryan won Super Bowl XLVIII with the Seattle Seahawks , becoming the first player from Saskatchewan to win a Super Bowl .

In the third quarter of the 2015 NFC Championship Game , Ryan threw a touchdown pass at Garry Gilliam after a fake field goal. He is the first punter to throw a touchdown pass in the playoffs .

On March 11, 2016, the Seattle Seahawks extended his contract for another four years.

On August 20, 2018, Ryan was released from the Seahawks. He is said to have previously asked for his release. Before that, he had competed in the first two preseason games with Michael Dickson selected in the previous NFL Draft , but with five punts averaged only 45.6 yards per punt, while Dickson was able to achieve 51.6 yards per punt with six punts. Ryan, at the end of his tenure with the Seahawks, held the franchise records for most punts (770), punt yards scored (34,491), punts within the 20-yard line (276), longest punt (77 yards), and most consecutive punt Games (159).

Buffalo Bills

On August 21, 2018, the Buffalo Bills signed Ryan. As part of the final squad reduction to 53 players before the start of the regular season , however, he was dismissed as redundant.

Saskatchewan Roughriders

In May 2019, the Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Ryan for a year. His achievements made him the West All-Star Division. After the season he was given a new one-year contract.

Personal

Ryan has been married to stand-up comedian Sarah Colonna since July 9, 2016 . In 2015 he took part in the entertainment show American Ninja Warrior .
