NFL

On April 29, 2012, the Seattle Seahawks signed Shead as an Undrafted Free Agent . He was released on August 31, 2012. On September 1, 2012, Shead was hired by the Seahawks for their Practice Squad . On November 27, 2013, he was promoted from the Practice Squad to the main squad. At first he was mainly active in the position of safety or nickelback before replacing Cary Williams as cornerback in 2015 . In April 2016 he signed an exclusive contract with the Seahawks. In the 2016 season , Shead was one of the two starters alongside Richard Sherman . Despite performing well, he was released into the Free Agency after the season . As of March 17, 2017, he signed a one-year contract with the Seahawks. With a knee injury in the preseason playoff loss, Shead spent much of the 2017 season on the PUP list . After two operations and several months of rehabilitation, it was reactivated before matchday 16. Due to his long time on the PUP list, the NFL was of the opinion that his one-year contract had not expired and that he was therefore also under contract with the Seahawks for the 2018 season . Since this contradicted the views of the Seattle Seahawks and the Players Union and General Manager John Schneider had already announced to Shead that he was going to be a free agent, the Seahawks fired Shead on March 12, 2018 to keep their word.

On March 14, 2018, DeShawn Shead signed a new contract with the Detroit Lions. As part of the final squad reduction to 53 players before the start of the regular season , he was dismissed. He was signed up again on September 19, 2018. On December 29, 2018, he was placed on the Injured Reserve List . After the season he became a free agent.

At the end of July 2019, the Seahawks signed Shead again. As part of the final squad reduction, he was fired after the preseason. On December 25, 2019, Shead was signed by the New Orleans Saints . He was released just three days later.
