Physically Unable to Perform

Physically Unable to Perform (PUP, dt. Not to work physically able ) is a term from the National Football League (NFL). This describes a player who sustained an injury during training or a game in the preseason or in the preseason ( football-related injury ), which prevents him from training and playing, but is assumed that he will return before, during or in the regular season . However , this does not include a football-related injury suffered by a player prior to signing an NFL team (e.g. college football ). These injuries are treated as a Non-Football Injury (NFI). A distinction is made between the two classifications Active / PUP and Reserve / PUP .

Players who are marked as Active / PUP cannot participate in the training camps taking place in the preseason from the beginning or they sustained an injury during these. You are only allowed to train again if a team's medical department allows it. Players who were marked as active / PUP from the start of the training camp and who have never trained with the team during the entire offseason can be marked as reserve / PUP . Alternatively, a player can be fired or placed on the Injured Reserve List . If a player is marked as reserve / PUP, then this player is not allowed to train or play for the first six weeks, but does not count as a player in the 53-man squad. After the six weeks, a team has a further six weeks in which to fire the player, place the player on the injured reserve list or bring the player back for training. From the time a player retrains, the team has three weeks to add him to the 53-man roster or to place him on the injured reserve list.

If a player injures himself during the regular season, he cannot be placed on the PUP list. If there are prospects that he will return to the regular or post season , the team can keep him in the 53-man roster but cannot replace him there. Alternatively, she can also place him on the Injured Reserve List and free up a place in the 53-man squad, but then not bring him back.
