Thomas "Tom" Lee Cable, Jr. (born November 26, 1964 in Merced , California ) is an American football coach and former football player. He is currently the coach of the offensive line for the Oakland Raiders in the National Football League (NFL).

Childhood and youth

Cable was born in Merced, California. He played high school football in Snohomish , Washington , northeast of Seattle . He went to the University of Idaho in 1982 .

Player career

Cable played for his college football team, the Idaho Vandals, for four years. In 1987 he signed the Indianapolis Colts as a replacement for missing players during the player strike, but he was never used.

Coaching career

college

Cable began his coaching career in college football . He was an assistant coach at the University of Colorado for 13 years before becoming head coach of his alma mater's football team on December 13, 1999 . There he spent four seasons, but could only win 11 of 46 games, which is why he was fired. Cable then became Offensive Coordinator at the University of California, Los Angeles for two seasons .

NFL

In 2006, Cable moved to the professional league when he took the job of coaching the offensive line with the Atlanta Falcons . At the end of the season, he left the franchise.

In 2007, Oakland signed the Raiders Cable as a trainer for the offensive line. After Head Coach Lane Kiffin was fired in the fourth week of the 2008 season , Cable became the interim head coach. On February 4, 2009, Cable was officially named head coach of the Raiders. On January 4, 2011, Raiders owner Al Davis Cable informed that his contract would not be renewed.

Two weeks later, the Seattle Seahawks announced that they had signed Cable as coach of the offensive line and assistant head coach under Pete Carroll . Cable won Super Bowl XLVIII with the Seahawks . He was fired after the Seahawks missed the playoffs in 2017 . Only a few days later, John Gruden signed him for his new coaching staff at the Oakland Raiders as the coach of the offensive line.
