Sherman Smith (born November 1, 1954 in Youngstown , Ohio ) is an American former American football player and coach. He was most recently the trainer of the running backs for the Seattle Seahawks in the National Football League (NFL).

Player career

Smith was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 1976 NFL Draft . He was the first offense player to be drafted by the new expansion team . When he ran 124 yards in a game against the Atlanta Falcons on November 7, 1976 , he became the first Seahawks player to run more than 100 yards in a game. Smith ran the most yards of the Seahawks for the first four seasons, running 3,429 yards and 28 touchdowns in his seven years with the franchise. In addition, he caught the ball 210 times, reaching 2,445 yards and 10 touchdowns. After joining the San Diego Chargers , he rarely played.

Coaching career

The following year, Smith began a high school teaching and coaching career. In 1990 he became a running back coach at Miami University . Between 1992 and 1994 he worked as a trainer for tight ends and running backs at the University of Illinois . In 1995, Smith became the running back coach for the Houston Oilers (later Tennessee Titans). In 2006 he was also promoted to assistant head coach.

2008 Smith left the Titans to the offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins to be, so he with his former Seahawks teammate Zorn Jim worked, which the head coach was the Redskins. After Zorn was released, Smith was also forced to vacate his post. Shortly thereafter, however, he was hired as a running back coach by the Seattle Seahawks. After the 2016 season he was released from his duties.
